Thanks for the solution. If the service start up is set to automatic and the server hasn't been rebooted, any idea why the service would suddenly stop?

Modifying any Mailbox.

Troubleshooting Performed:
The following troubleshooting steps were performed for the resolution of the issue :
Verifying Exchange services. All services were running properly including the System Attendant.
Re-started the System Attendant services. (As mentioned in many technical forums).
Performed Failover of the Cluster. Successful but the issues persists.
Shifting FSMO roles to other domain controllers.
Your prompt support will be highly appreciated.

Thanks ..I have just upgraded to win 2008/exch 2007 and have had several issues but am almost there. Thanks for this solution ..I can't believe it was that simple. Strange though the service was on automatic so maybe there is a bug in this new sw.

I have that problem, I can't move a mailbox from a database to another database in the same server.
I have my mailbox dserver role in a Cluster escenario. In the active node, the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant is running.
any idea why I can't move the mailbox?
TIA

What a convoluted error message! Could just say "Exchange System Management Service may be stopped" or, "A critical service is not started".
September 8th, 2010 11:56pm
Sorry to bump a very old thread, but I am having this problem but starting the service is not the complete answer. When I attempt to start the service, it stops right away, giving the following error:
The Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service on the Local Computer started and then stopped.
The event log entry says:
Unexpected error No authority could be contacted for authentication. ID no: 80090311 Microsoft Exchange System Attendant occurred.
Any ideas? THANKS!

If you have cluster mailbox, check if the service is online in Failover Cluster Management console, after you start it via services.msc.
