Hi

All of the users of exchange 2010 are hitting the web filter server.  Mail works fine but I am wondering why the traffic has to hit our web filter and then come back internal.  It could cause a bottleneck and impair the gateway if it gets overloaded.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please

For what kind of user did this issue happen? External user? Or internal user? What is a web filter server?

Based on your description, I suspect it might be related with your MX record, as MX records are mail exchange records used for determining the priority of email servers for a domain. The lowest priority email server is the first destination for email. If the lowest priority email server is unavailable, mail will be sent to the higher priority email servers.
