Adding a second exchange 2007 server to the domain.
Im familiar with exchange 2003 but new to exchange 2007. We have a customer that has 2 offices, one in Miami one in NY connected using an MPLS all IP address are local. They have a domain controller and an exchange server 2007 in the NW office and a domain controller in florida (replicating) and now we need to add a second server in the Miami office. This server will eventually become the primary server. I have seen tons on info on how to add a new server but no info on adding a second server. Can you guys point me in the right direction? I want to eliminate down time or stop email flow.

Introducing second or additional server in an environment, which has already Exchange 2007, is pretty simple. Just join the server in to domain and start installation which will detect the Exchange organization and will install accordingly. Main portion is how you plan mail flow and depends on your Exchange environment still has any Exchange 2003 server and Outlook 2003 clients. ~ If you have Exchange 2003 server then you need to configure Routing Group Connectors to set new server as a bridgehead before removing first Exchange 2007 server. ~ If you have Outlook 2003 or earlier outlook client then you need to move all public folders to new Exchange 2007 server. ~ You also need to set connectors for internet or foreign mail flow to send/receive email from new server. You can refer below article to configure all these settings. Article is for coexistence scenario but it gives you brief overview on what all settings and how to configure while removing first Exchange 2007 server. Yes totally agreed with amit ,you just install a new machine and add your server to a member server of your domain and install exchange Server 2007 ,there is nothing related to schema changes as you already have an exchange server in your enviornment .Here is your solution for installing a typical exchange server 2007 .http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123694.aspxThanks Syed Arsalan.syed.arsalan

Thanks guys!My concern is that im not sure what role I should give to the new server without affecting mail flow to the main server mail.xxxxx.com in NY. At the same time I want to start moving the mailboxes to the new server and only use it to hold the mailboxes for now. Later when Im ready I want to change the rest of the roles and set the Miami server as the one handling email send and receive and remove the NY server.

Will it be only Exchange server in Miami AD Site? If so, you need to install all Exchange server roles (Mailbox, Hub, CAS) on that server because a Mailbox server role requires to have at least a CAS and a Hub Transport server in same AD site. However adding that server will not impact mail flow, nor pause during installation but once you move all users and when you remove first server before that you need to check the things which I mentioned in previous post.Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com Yes that is correct, within a month the only exchange server will be the Miami server. So if Im understanding correctly: I need to install exchange in the Miami office and make it (Mailbox, HUB, and CAS) This will not affect email flow in the organization I will be able to later, (or do I need to do it during installation?) move all mailboxes to the new server still using the NY server to send and receive and for OWA. I will later move the remaining roles to the Miami server Remove the NY server Change MX record to Miami IP.

Yes correct, then you need to install all server roles, it doesn't affect mail flow, you can move mailboxes slowly at later stage. OWA can be accessed through NY server and requests will be proxied to Miami CAS server internally for the users whose mailboxes are on Miami server at the time. You need to have new certificate for new CAS if new CAS server name is not available in SAN certificate. Yes, later you may reconfigure connectors and MX record for the internet mail flow while removing NY server... You might want to start a new discussion, with details on your environment. The discussion above is 3 years old. Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you.
