Adding a second Mailbox Store
What's the best practice for adding a second Mailbox Store? We have 1 Exchange server running Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2. I know the second store needs to be on it's own partition but what about the logs? Can they be stored on the same drive as the first stores log files? Thanks gman

Ideally, they should be on their own set of spindlessince mixing multiple sets of log files on one set of spindles changesthe characteristics of the I/O from sequential to random. You can also put the 2nd database into the same storage group as theone you have now. How well things work will depend on whether the setof disks you use can support the IOPS. If they can then there's reallyno "need" to separate the storage groups onto different sets ofspindles. There are other considerations when choosing your diskarrangements, though. Things like whether you're willing to lose allyour e-mail access if the one RAID you use fails catastrophically, orif the RAID you use for all your log files decides to disappear.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
