Adding a Exchange 2007 server to a domain with exchange 2000
I am involved in a project to migrate a client from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2007. Let me describe the environment first: Site 1 DC1 Windows 2000 No FSMO roles GC DC2 Windows 2000 Exchange 2000 No FSMO roles GC DC4 Windows 2008 All FSMO role GC Site 2 DC3 Windows 2003 No FSMO role GC I want to install Exchange 2007 SP 1 on DC4. I will then move mailboxes from DC2 to DC4 and DC2 will be decommissioned. I know it is not Best Practice to put Exchange on a DC but the site only has 2 DC's so we are doing it this way. Does this environment meet all the requirements to allow us to install Exchange 2007 on DC4? Specifically related to Global Catalogs and DC's I do not want to have to add a Window 2003 server into site 1 and make it the exchange server in order for this migration to move ahead. Thank you for your replies in advance.

hi,please check system requirements for Exchange Server 2007 installation.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719.aspxand now in this scenario you can do it.and also just look at here for transition to Exchange server 2007 from Exchange 2000/2003 ;http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Transitioning-Exchange-2000-2003-Exchange-Server-2007-Part1.htmlregards,Mumin CICEK | Exchange - MVP | www.cozumpark.com | www.mumincicek.com

YOu will need to remove the W2K Servers that have GCs on them. Exchange will not respond well. I would recommend that you deploy new W2K3 or W2k8 servers to replace them. Also, make sure that the W2K3 (DC3) server has at least Service Pack 1.I would not recommend installing Exchange 2007 on a domain controller. It is actually recommended not to do this so if you can find a x64 bit server elsewhere for the deployment even better. Also, you should have at least two GC DC in the same AD site as Exchange 2007. The memory on those servers should be 2GB + the size of your AD Database. So reviewing your enviornment deploy Exchange 2007 in Site 2 with an addtional DC with a GC on it on a seperate server. Move mailboxes from DC2 to the new Exchange 2007 server.Honestly if you can't get a new box for Exchange 2007 then deploy it on the DC (not recommended) or find a way to take an Old DC that can support x64 and use that. Any VM infrastructure?SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS

I understand your concerns regarding putting exchange 2007 on a dc and I know it is not bets practice but this site will only have two servers and I prefer to have both be dc's Can you please reconfirm the requirements because I believe with Exchange 2007 SP1 I cna add exchange 2007 on the Windows 2008 server exven with windows 2000 dc//gc in the site. This is my real confusiobn as I have gotten different answers to this question.

Hi,From the description, the requirements are meet except for the Exchange 2007 is integrated with DC.Although not recommended, you can do that on the premise thatconsider the following reasons:1. Exchange Server and Active Directory are both resource-intensive applications. There are performance implications to be considered when both applications are running on the same computer.2. If Exchange Server is running on a domain controller, you must also make that domain controller a global catalog server.3. Several Exchange Server directory components, such as Directory Service Access (DSAccess), Directory Service Proxy (DSProxy), and the Message Categorizer will not fail over to any other domain controller or global catalog server.4. You should not take advantage of the /3GB startup switch in Windows because it could cause Exchange Server to consume all memory, therefore reducing the memory available for Active Directory. 5. System shutdown will take much longer if the Exchange Server services are not stopped before you shut down or restart the server. 6. This configuration is less secure because Exchange administrators will have local administrative access to Active Directory. This enables them to elevatetheir own privileges. Additionally, any security vulnerability found in either Exchange Server or Active Directory exposes the other to compromise. 7. If you are running Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange Server 2007 on a domain controller, using the domain controller promotion tool (DCPromo) to change the computer role is not supported, and it is known to break components such as Microsoft Outlook Mobile Access. 8. Running Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange Server 2007 on a clustered node that is also an Active Directory domain controller is not supported and should never be performed.http://www.petri.co.il/problems_with_exchange_2003_installed_on_domain_controllers.htmThanksAllen

Exchange 2007 does not support a Windows 2000 Domain Controller acting as a GC and in the same site. You will get warnings and errors in the event log if you have a W2K DC acting as a GC in the same AD site as Exchange.SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS

According to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719.aspx Global catalog server In every ActiveDirectory directory service site where you plan to installExchange2007, you must have at least one global catalog server that is running WindowsServer2003 SP1 or a later version.
