Adding a 2003 Std R2 server to a domain
I am trying to add a new Windows 2003 R2 server to an existing domain so as to transfer roles and then remove the old server. There is underlying problems with the old server as it will not accept the changes when running adprep or even MS updates. I would like to take over the domain and not have to start over with a new domain. I have joined the domain with the new server but get an error when running dcpromo the the domain needs to be upgraded and to run adprep. I have done this several times and the padrep does ot have any effect on the old server. Is there any way of making the new server a domain controller for the existing domain and seizing the roles?

Hi Bob,I think this may be related to trying to add an the R2 Server. If your domain controllers are 2003 then they are running a different version of AD than if they are running 2003 R2. If this is the issue, then it can be resolved byinstalling the R2packageontoan existing 2003 Domain Controller, then using dcpromoto promote the R2 box.-matt

You are correct, that is what I am trying to do, BUT, the old server is not allowing the adprep to upgrade the AD to the R2. I have tried several time to do this all to no avail. What I am thinking is that if there is a way to make the new server a domain controller then seize the domain roles as if the old server failed and was not able to be used.

Hi Bob,You could make the new server a domain controller as long as it is not an R2 server. So if you run dcpromo before running the 2nd disc of Windows Server 2003 R2 then you will be able to dcpromo, then you can transfer the roles to the new server, dcpromo to demote the old server and then run adprep and install R2 on the new server.-matt
