It isnt called a Front End anymore. Its called a Client Access Server, or CAS. Your current single server already has that role on it (in all likelihood). There is a pre-req guide for you to use: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691354.aspx and once youve done that you will be able to migrate all of the settings from the current CAS role onto the new dedicated CAS box. However, theres always a however. What do you want this front end to do? I have just given you some help on the CAS role but that might not actually be what you want. You may just want the Edge role. Tell us a little more about why this front end is needed and we can help you install the right solution. "whtsniper" wrote in message news:e8d126e3-57d1-4a6c-864e-8584fbd42015... I want it for OWA so we don't have to change certificate when we move servers. We also want tu use IPHONE to connect to our infra. which role do you think we should do ?? i want to use 2007 not 2010 if possible thanks !!

So you only gave half the background, right? You said you had a single mailbox server. What you really mean is that you are eventually looking to get another mailbox server and would then have certificate problems when you moved a mailbox from Svr1 to Svr2. Youd also have to tell people about the URL changing and youd have to have two IPs with TCP443 open. So yes, get a dedicated CAS in place. There are endless articles for installing the 2007 pre-reqs, just like the 2010 that I pasted in by mistake. See: http://www.petri.co.il/installing-exchange-2007-prerequisites-on-windows-server-2008.htm as a decent one. "whtsniper" wrote in message news:11516b3e-e7c5-4466-9584-f6d855d93fb4... Sorry if i express myself not correctly (haha) , im not used to enfglish very well but im not too bad anyway. Back to our case, Im not intended to move server or add a server2 unti lwe upgrade to 2010 in two years. i just want to set a upfront server that will stay there for OWA and Iphone even if we change srvr1. So it has to be CAS or edge only, that is what i need AND how is the best way to implement that in my one server plan thanks Mark

The edge is your first defense against spams attacks. Also you can add forefront for exchange to complete this security goal. The CAS role must be in your internal network with Hub transport and mailbox roles! that's mandatory in exchange 2010. These 3 roles are fundamentals to make a solution based on exchange 2010. Follow the guide for the pre-requisites that I posted earlier. Then install Exchange, selecting the CAS role only. Use the existing CAS as your template and transfer the certificate from old to new. Once youre done and tested you can then uninstall the CAS role from the old box. You just run the Exchange setup again and it goes into whats called maintenance mode. You can untick the CAS tickbox. Hi whtsniper, From your description, I understand that you want to move CAS role from the server (you are using ) to a new single server. Please correct me if I misunderstand. For this issue, you can follow these steps to achieve the goal: 1. Follow these document to install a new CAS server(only install CAS role): Setting up Exchange 2007 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125169(EXCHG.80).aspx How to Perform a Custom Installation Using Exchange Server 2007 Setup http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125143(EXCHG.80).aspx 2. After install the new CAS server, export the certificate form the server (you are using), import the certificate to the new server. How to Export an SSL Certificate http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb310778(EXCHG.80).aspx How to Install an SSL Certificate on a Client Access Server http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb310769(EXCHG.80).aspx 3. Follow this document to remove existing CAS role: How to Remove Exchange 2007 Server Roles http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124115(EXCHG.80).aspx Thanks, Evan Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
