Add Role to Exchange 2007 SP2 with Exchange 2007 SP1 CD
I have a single Server installation with all Roles except UM. I updated the Server to the latest SP and Rollup. Now when I try to install UM Role with the original CD I get the error message: "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.". error code 1638 As far as I understood that is becaus of the different versions of the installed server and the install source. But how can I solve that? Thank you very much alex

Hi, Is it not better to run Exchange 2007 SP2 setup on this new server because your existing exchange server has this version? Since Ex 2007 SP2 is a complete installer so u wont need anything else to install Exchange 2007 roles on a new server. That would be right. Install the UM role using the Exchange 2007 SP2 media.-- Ed Crowley MVP"There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems.". thank you for that link, but the message is persistant. my Install CD is a RTM. I even copied it to the HD and copied SP2 into the "Updates" folder and pointed to this Installdirectory - nothing changed. I get the same message. I tried it both with "Add\Remove Programs" and the command line. what did I miss? thank you.

Ok, so you went to Add/Remove Programs, selected "Change", Next, the checked the UM role to install, yes? then what happened?

Amazing - that did it! You have to install through the SP2 install! thanks a lot! Actually you dont have to :)Try this next time. Go to Add/Remove programs.Right Click the Exchange 2007 program entry.Select ChangeThe Wizard starts. It says right there that it will now let you choose what role to add.Click Next.Check the role you want to install and follow the wizard steps to add.

It may sound strange but I did that - and it didn't work. That's why I ended here. And that is why I am so thankful, because with work according to the guides it didn't work out. Thanks again everyone! ;)

I'll wager the problem is that the original installation was done from DVD, and the SP2 upgrade was done from a downloaded file, and that Add/Remove is looking for required files from the original install location.
