A lot of shared mailboxes connected

Hi

I have a problem with mailboxes that have connected a lot (40) of shared mailboxes. I know that's not really a good situation, but they need it because of a third party tool.

All mailboxes are connected, but my problem now is of course, that the users are unable to open all of the connected mailboxes. "Cannot open the folder.  The set of folders cannot be opened.  Microsoft Exchange is not available."

At the beginning I had these 9646 errors in the event log of the Exchange Server (exceeded the maximum of 32 objects of type Session). I added the registry key "Maximum Allowed Sessions Per User" with a value of 64. The error disappeared, but the users are still unable to open all mailboxes. There are no other warnings or error messages in the server eventlog.

The users must be able to open all these connected mailboxes. How can I achieve that?

Any suggestion would be appreciated!

KB2889859 is already installed.

The snapshot of the error message id in German, an it means "Cannot expand the folder. Microsoft Exchange is not available. Either there are network problems or the Exchange server is down for maintenance."

Hi Peter,

We could refer to the following link to create a new Outlook profile to check if the issue persist. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Exit Outlook.
2. In Control Panel, click or double-click Mail. 
3. To locate the Mail item, open Control Panel, and then in the Search box at the top of window, type Mail. In Control Panel for Windows XP, type Mail in the Address box.
4. Click Show Profiles.
5. Click Add.
6. Type a name for the profile, and then click OK.
7. Follow the Add Account wizard to add your email account. When you're done, click Finish.
8. In Mail, make sure that the Always use this profile option is selected, and then select your new profile name from the list.

Are the shared mailboxes cached in Outlook? If so, uncheck the option that caches them

Hi Peter,

For testing, we could delete a shared folder and add it manually to check if we could open it.

We could check if we could open it in OWA, then check if the issue persist in outlook on the other PC.

Automapped mailboxes I can only remove by removing FullAccess mailbox rights. If I open this mailbox using owa it works. I can create a new outlook profile with only that mailbox and it works, by using my credentials.

To remember, within my personal outlook profile I have about 40 automapped mailboxes. About 30 I can open, the rest does not work, but they all work by OWA or a separate outlook profile.  So it's not a problem of access rights.

I disabled "Download shared folders", but still the same problem.

There must be a limitation somewhere, that prevents me to open all the automapped mailboxes. I know it's not the best solution to have 40 automapped mailboxes, but it is needed because of a third party software.

I would really appreciate if you could help me.

Update:
I added one mailbox that I can't access, as a separate account, and I can see it now twice within my outlook profile, once automapped and once as separate account. The automapped mailbox I cannot open, while the one added as separate account works.

I now disabled the "Download shared folders", but I still have access to only some of the automapped mailboxes.

We could change the value of Maximum Allowed Sessions Per User into 128, then restart Microsoft Exchange Information Store to check if the issue persist.

Seems to work! Thanks a lot.

I already increased the value of "Maximum Allowed Sessions Per User" from 32 (default) to 64. But because the 9646 eventlog errors disappeared, I didn't try to go to a value of 128.

I will keep an eye on it, but for the moment it seems to work.
