A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients
I am receiving the following message when sending a messages from mailboxes located on exchange 2003 to mailboxes located on exchange 2007. A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator. <#5.3.5>No Events are logged in exchange 2007. The event viewer is logging the following message on exchange 2003.Event ID: 3017 A looping condition was detected. (The server is configured to route mail back to itself). If you have multiple SMTP Virtual Servers configured on your Exchange server, make sure they are defined by a unique incoming port and that the outgoing SMTP port configuration is valid to avoid looping between local virtual servers. Solution: Check the configuration of the virtual server connectors for loops and ensure each virtual server is defined by a unique incoming port.Sending messages from Exchange 2007 mailboxes to Exchange 2003 works fine.Any ideas on what could be causing this?

I have already checked everything in this kb article you indicated against our system. Everything was fine.

I'm guessing the problem has something to do with the connector created between exchange 2003 and 2007 during the install of 2007 so the two servers can send mail to one another. Any ideas?

Verify that the 2003 server specified during installation is the Front-end server if you use a front-end / back-end configuration. IF you specified the wrong server, you can change the server on both routing group connectors. You can only change this using powershell. Here's the cmdline: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998581(EXCHG.80).aspx
