AD user not a mail-enabled user but has a User Mailbox?
We have been using a migration tool to migrate our Lotus Notes users to Exchange 2007. I believe this tool first creates Mail User objects for each of the matching AD users/mailboxes and then creates User Mailboxes when the migration occurs which should remove them in Recipient Configuration as Mail Users. However, I have noticed that many of our recent migrations have left the AD users as 'Mail Users' while also creating 'User Mailboxes' for them. I believe this causes an issue in our GAL as the previous contacts are not getting their X500 addresses copied to the User Mailbox and users who select the wrong user from the GAL arereceivingan undeliverable message. My real question is that when I open thepropertiesfor the 'Mail User' in the Exchange Management Console I get the following error: domain/OU/User is not a mail-enabled user. It was running command 'get-mailuser -ReadFromDomainController -Identity 'domain/OU/User''. I don't know much about Exchange but if the user is not mail-enabled then how can the same user have a mailbox? And if I disable the Mail User in the management console, will it remove the link between the User and the User Mailbox? Also, There are four users who have entries in 'Disconnected Mailbox' that also have a User Mailbox and are able to send and receive mail. I am not sure of the LegacyDN however because it says /O=domain/OU=EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=User, which is not the location of the AD user. Any information is appreciated! Thanks, Steve

It sounds as if the software that's doing the work isn't removing thenew AD properties from the mail-enabled user. The Exchange ManagementConsole and Exchange Management Shell look for (at least) these twoproperties:msExchRecipientDisplayTypemsExchRecipientTypeDetailsIf the older software is removing the mail-enabling attributes butleaving these (and others) still populated then the EMC and EMS areldn't.>And if I disable the Mail User in the management console, will it remove the link between the User and the User Mailbox? If there are two objects (a "Mail User" and a "User Mailbox") thereare two AD objects. Disabling the "Mail User" will just remove theattributes from that object and have no effect on the other user thathas a mailbox assigned.>Also, There are four users who have entries in 'Disconnected Mailbox' that also have a User Mailbox and are able to send and receive mail. Thanks, Steve Users don't appear in the "Disconnected Mailboxes", only mailboxes. Ifthe mailbox is "disconnected" it means that the values in the mailbox(mailboxGUID or legacyExchangeDN) don't match anything in the ActiveDirectory. They may be mailboxes that were assigned to these users, and new mailboxes were created for them.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
