2007 Exchange.. Antivirus.. Edge role.. Specs? General help with deployment options...
i've heard its best to have an "edge server role" on a perimeter machine? This machine apparently has to only be part of a workgroup though, using ADAM to communicate with the domain. Does anyone know what the recommended specs would be for a machine to run just this? x64 needed here too, min ram? I know this is recommended practice, but in reality, we've run our setup from the same box.. as we are a small company with 40 users and 4 servers, no perimiter network setup as of yet. Will forefront security not work on the same box where the mailboxes are etc (non- edge server)? Can I still put the antispam on this same box too? (if we need to) ? (ideally we would put everything on the same box as we do now, then maybe do the extra perimeter role later on if possible) Does forefront security/antivirus only come on the enterprise version of Exchange 2007, does unified messaging only come on the enterprise version? Finally... Does anyone know if a digital phone system like ours, which isnt voip capable can work with unified messaging? I've heard something about getting a gateway, I'm not sure what this gateway is, that we'd need either.. we have an 8 year old comdial phone system, which has digital lines and 2 analog lines. **Currently we use SMB from trend micro for antivirus, which they say is incompatible till later this year, or scanmail8 would be another option, but requires a purchase. **We also use Symantec Brightmail 6.x for antispam, symantec claims it will work, even on the x64 platform? Thanks

I'd say simplify life and use exchange hosted filtering for spam/av. Trend has a compatible scanmail version out though btw. http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/services/filtering.mspx
