2003 replicate with 2000 in trusted domain?
Not sure if this is the correct portion of the Exchange Server forum to post this in, but I couldn't find a subfolder that pertained directly to this. We are currently running Exchange 2003 in our domain and we have a remote office that is configured as it's own domain. We have a trust set up between their domain and ours and they access our Exchange server for email. They want to set up their own Exchange server to host their email that is currently hosted on ours. We own a license for Exchange 2000 Server with CALs for it. Would it be possible to install Exchange 2000 in their domain and then make it part of our Exchange "farm" and then move those mailboxes to that server? If it couldn't be configured under our Exchange "farm" could ours be configured where it would replicate or forward messages for their mailboxes on to that Exchange 2000 server? I don't know if I'm explaining that well or concisely, feel free to ask for more clarification. Thanks.

See "Cross-Forest Topology" here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124765.aspx you'll need a "directory synchronization solution". I wouldn't invest too much in to exchange 2000 deployments. You should be looking at Exchange 2007 solutions for new projects.

Not sure why I shouldonly be looking at Exchange 2007 since, so far, I have seen nothing that would encourage me to move our current Exchange 2003 server to 2007. We are a small company with 150 employees, I see no improvements with 2007 that arebeneficial to a company my size. All the improvements are on an enterprise scale with multiple servers, etc.

Well I don't work for Microsoft and am not really trying to sell it, but I see a few reasons you should use 2k7 over 2k. If you are using 2003 currently, thats not as bad, but you made reference above to deploy older 2000 servers. Microsoft mainstream support ended in early 2006. Email is usually mission critical information and having the vendor at your back with support if issues arise is a significant asset there are a lot of features that were introduced in 2003 that are not available in 2k. rpc over https for example, and an awesome OWA Exchange 2007 has LCR. This is a great feature for small business, as CCR is for big business. some features of Exchange 2007 are better for any size business, such as sharepoint integration better OWA, autodiscover, etc.this list could go on much longer, but like i said i'm not trying to sell it, i just wanted to put out a warning to others that read this post. dont think deploying Exchange 2000 is a good growth strategy. Either stay the same or move forward.
