(2003) Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 error 1075 (MSExchangeIS missing)
Hi, I'm running Server 2003 with Exchange, when trying to start the IMAP4 service I get an error 1075 about missing depency. And the event logged says: The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service depends on the following nonexistent service: MSExchangeIS MSExchangeIS is not in the registry nor in the list of services, can I recreate the service without the install media? I have no idea how the service disappeared.

Unfortunately I'm not sure, I am new to Exchange and there's only 2 users, but it works fine for both. Since the MSexchangeIS service does not exist at all I am going to guess that it's not running.

As I said in the original thread, the service is neither to be found in services.msc nor in the registry. The KB article you linked to does unfortunately not help, the service is not in the list.

When you look at the properties of the "Microsoft Exchange IMAP4" service, check the "Dependancies" tab. That service depends on the "IIS Admin Service", the "Security Accounts Manager" service, and the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" service. You can stop the "Microsoft Exchange Information Store" service and it won't affect the state of the "Microsoft Exchange IMAP4" service. If, as you say, you cannot find the "MSExchangeIS" (that's the name of registry key) then run this command in a cmd.exe window: "net start msexchangeis". Does it tell you the service is already running? You can check the service's data in the registry, too. The "DependOnService" key for that service should contain this: EXIFS MSExchangeSA AntigenStore --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store (MSExchangeIS) service does not show up in the list or under dependencies.

I think we both know that MSExchangeIS is a dependency for the IMAP4 service, no matter if it shows up or not. The eventlog confirms this. The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service depends on the following nonexistent service: MSExchangeIS

I can stop the MSExchangeIS service and the IMAP4 service doesn't stop. >The eventlog confirms this. But the registry data that defines the dependancy does not. >The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service depends on the following nonexistent service: MSExchangeIS From where have you got that information? --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

I feel like we are going in circles, and I might've been unclear on several points. But please see the following screenshot showing exactly how it looks and each of the error I've mentioned. http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/843/servergs.jpg To me that one shows clearly that IMAP4 depends on the IS, that the IS is not in the list of services and that the dependencies for the IMAP4 service is empty.

But that's because, until now, you haven't answered the questions about what you see in the registry. All you've said is that the MSExchaneIS doesn't show up as a dependance for the IMAP4 service. In that regard you're correct, but only because it shouldn't be there. >But please see the following screenshot showing exactly how it looks and each of the error I've mentioned. > >http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/843/servergs.jpg > > > >To me that one shows clearly that IMAP4 depends on the IS, that the IS is not in the list of services and that the dependencies for the IMAP4 service is empty. It actually shows that, for the service "IMAP4Svc", there are NO dependancies. That's wrong. Check the registry and find the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IMAP4Svc key. There's a "DependOnService" value in that key and it should be: DataName: DependOnService DataType: REG_MULTI_SZ DataValue: IISAdmin When you look at the service's properties, the "Dependancies" should look like this (if the dependancies are correctly specified for the service): ..+ IIS Admin Service .. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) .. - Security Accounts Manager .. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) If the DependOnService is empty (or missing) there may be other damage in your registry, too. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
