wss2.0 Users unable to open default home page since upgrading to Internet Explorer 7
Hi All, There are multiple users who are not able to load the default home pages of sharepoint sites. They are able to load other pages on the same sharepoint site, just not the home page. The page seems to be trying to load for hours on end but never opens. No error messages appear, just a blank screen. This issue started when IE7 was loaded on their workstations. Anyone else experienced similar issues out there? I'm tempted to think there is a setting on IE that needs to be changed, but not sure where to start looking. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hello Maclons, Do all SharePoint users complain about the issue . From the issue description it looks like some of your users are able to browse to the home page just fine . If yes lets perform a couple of additional actions to isolate and narrow down if the issue is client specific or if we need to take any actions on the server. Identify an user facing the issue and an user not facing the issue . Can we request the user facing the issue to log in to the box of the user not facing the issue and browse to the SharePoint site and see if he still experiences the issue. What is the behavior when a SharePoint administrator logs into the server itself and tries to browse to the site . What if you explicitly add the site to the list of trusted sites and try to browse to it. Sine the issue is with home page what sort of customization you have ... We may also want to look at a simultaneous Netmon trace from client and server experiencing the issue. Based on the above response we can take necessary action to look at few logs on the server and see . ============================================== Manas-MSFT

Not all users are affected. I've had a problematic user test on another user's machine (who can access the home page) and the problematic user can access the home page. As an administrator, I am able to access the home pages of the SharePoint sites through IE7 on test workstations as well as on the server. There are no customizations on the home pages, just default out-of-the-box web parts. I will have a user test by adding to the trusted sites and advise the results.

Thank you Maclons for the update. Do let us know if adding to trusted sites has helped. Also can you check if the users who are able to browse to the home page are all admins and non-admins are facing the issue. If the above is true It's common to see this issue if you have a Data View Web part on the homepage and have not yet run SP3 rollup for 2003. The rollup should address this. This was one of those "one-off" situations around this - IE7 and WSS2. You should be able to find this out pretty fast if admins can browse the site, but users can't. If that is true, probably your issue. ======================================== Manas-MSFT

Thanks for your assistance thus far. Different kinds of users are unable to access the default home page. There are administrators, contributors and readers who are facing this problem. As for the 'Trusted Sites', on the test workstations on which I am able to access the entire sites, the sites are NOT added as trusted sites. Users don't have access to update this setting automatically, so I'll need them to log separate tickets for assistance with this. I've checked and there are no data view web parts on the home pages.

Thank you for the update . You have mentioned that you had a problematic user test on another user's machine (who can access the home page) and the problematic user can access the home page. This makes me think that this is more likely a client side issue like user profile or may be browser add on etc.You may want to further narrow down by following the steps below a> Have a user that does not have a problem log in to the problematic user's machine and test if he still faces the issue . b> If the problematic user has a different browser installed on the machine you may want to request him to browse the same site from the other browser and Check , but based on browsers end user experience may vary while browsing to SharePoint. Check out http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263526(office.12).aspx c> Also can you check if you have the site added to the list of trusted sites and the browser setting is set to automatically log on with current user name and password . d> However geting a Netmon/Fiddler trace from the client and getting the IIS logs from the server while reproducing the issue can tell you actually what is happening. ================================================== Manas -MSFT

Thanks for your responses. I think I am 1 step closer to the resolution. On 1 problematic site that displayed multiple web parts, I decreased the number of items displayed in the view. Now a user of that site is able to load the home page. He says it is still slow, but at least it loads. I hope I wouldn't have to change the views on ALL the default home pages to accomodate IE7 users! Any ideas? Is it perhaps somehow related to the size of IE7 cache?

Good to know that the site is accessible for the users now . You may want to check if the slow loading of site is consistent across only users using IE7. If the issue is consistent across all users and not only IE7 users, and just with the home page we may need to look at the webparts and the way your home page is customized . As I had mentioned earlier you may want to take a Fiddler trace ,look at IIS logs for IIS return response time , or may take a Netmon trace during slow page loads to check if it showed any networking issues contributing to delays (ie.retransmits, packet loss, etc). If you identify the issue is only with all IE 7 users you may want to go through the below steps in a test machine and see if it helps. (Please ensure you test out the below in a test environment as this entire analysis is based on the problem description.) IE7 has built-in "private" caching. You may want to navigate to Internet explorer>>tools>>Internet Options>> Under browsing history click on settings and check on the option Automatically for temporary internet files. Both IE7 and IE8 OOTB have fewer max server connections than they could have… To the best of my knowlege I think OOB they are IE7 defaults to 2 server connections IE8 defaults to 6 server connections Microsoft provides a patch to increase this value: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/282402?p=1 . Now that the site is accessible to users if you consistently see a performance issue I would recommend analysis of logs mentioned above to actually narrow down the issue and then proceed accordingly. ================================ Manas-MSFT

Hi all As an FYI, the patch http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/282402?p=1 resolved this issue for most users. Thanks Manas :-)
