w3wp and OWSTIMER processes taking 85% CPU resources
Hi All, My sharepoint site is performing very slow. I have noticed that it takes almost 30 seconds to load the site. Upon checking all processes on SharePoint front end server. I have analyzed that w3wp and OWSTIMER processes are taking almost 85% CPU resources. Any idea what is causing the problem. For your information: 1.We have deployed sharepoint with medium farm topology (that is SharePoint Front End and SharePoint database servers are on separate machines) 2. SharePoint Server machines are XEON based with 4 GB RAM 3. Total users in my farm are almost 250 4. Our sharepoint usage is mostly related to Content Management (Document Checkin/Checkout) and web based infopath forms. Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, This could be any number of things, and it would be helpful to know which version of SharePoint and any errors that might be in the application/error log. Here are some stabs in the dark: 1) Take a look at your indexing schedule. I've seen this happen when incremental crawls are scheduled too close together and end up overlapping. 2) Are there any really large lists in any of your sites? I've seen SharePoint/database backups get hung on large lists that exceed recommended values. Then the backups site there and eat up cpu. 3) Are there any hung publishing jobs? 4) Any custom web applications that are using the dispose method on SPWeb objects? Those are my quick stabs in the dark. If you can provide some more specific information, I'm sure you'll get more of a response from the community. Dear Brian Hochgurtel, Appreciate your help and response. I will check all your mentioned solutions. As you requested I am using SharePoint Server 2007 Enterprise with Service Pack 2 updated (Version: 12.0.6425.1000) and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise with Service Pack 3 updated. I have not used any third party tool or custom web application with my sharepoint envoironment. My operating system is Server 2003 along with IIS 6.0 for both SharePoint Front End and Back End Server. I have noticed following errors in my SharePoint logs Error Message 1: 79 heaps created, above warning threshold of 32. Check for excessive SPWeb or SPSite usage. Error Message 2: Potentially excessive number of SPRequest objects (15) currently unreleased on thread 28. Ensure that this object or its parent (such as an SPWeb or SPSite) is being properly disposed. Error Message 3: Unknown SPRequest error occurred. More information: 0x8102009b Error Message 4: An SPRequest object was reclaimed by the garbage collector instead of being explicitly freed. Error Message 5: ERROR: request not found in the TrackedRequests. We might be creating and closing webs on different threads. If you require any further information or query, please feel free to ask.
