users pictures lose their format in SP lists
Dear all, we have to upload the picture of staff in a 3x4 format. So the profiles look very nice, but the problem I am facing is when I have user with photo as a column in a list, SharePoint out-of-box strecht these pictures to a square. Some Women do not like it because they get to look fatter then they actually are so they tell. :-) My question, is there a way I can have the photos on those lists with a 3x4 format instead of the square 3x3? Thanks in advance. Regards, Gonçalo Gonçalo

I guess you are uploading a profile photo which is too small for the profile picture place holder. Please use an image with better resolution for profile images. In MOSS 2007 the images are not resized for profile photos . Aravind http://aravindrises.blogspot.com

Thanks Aravind. Sorry, forgot to mention that we have MOSS. We upload the photos with 150x200 px but they schrink to something like 15x15 (instead of 15x20) in a list view. That is actually my problem. Regards, GonçaloGonalo

Hi Gonçalo, Do you upload the photos to a picture library, and photo size had changed in Thumbnails view? I did a test base on this situation. The picture would not change the proportion. In other word, it will shrink the size (150x200) to 120x160, but keeping the 3x4 format in thumbnails mode. Here is a blog about resize the thumbnails in a Picture library. http://vspug.com/keutmann/2007/01/27/how-to-resize-the-thumbnails-in-a-picture-library/ If you create a column with picture type in a list, and add the picture by adding the original URL of the picture. The size of the pictures in the list would not change. Please check the size of the pictures (you type in the web address text box in the picture column). Perhaps you are using a wrong URL. The right picture URL should like this: http://server/Picture Library/pic.jpg Thumbnail URL: http://server/Picture Library/_t/pic.jpg Preview picture URL: http://server/Picture Library/_w/pic.jpg Best regards, Emir

Dear Emir, tahnks a lot for your answer with very good content which was very helpful anyway. I have unmarked it answer because I still have my initial question (maybe I could not explain it very well). Let me try once again: My pictures as I told before are uploaded in a proportion 3x4. When I create a list (custom list) and choose the field Person or Group and then choose name (with picture and details), what will happen is that the user will be populated on that list with a square proportion: 4x4 and the initial photo will be strecht (a user told me the right words: "I am squished on the contacts list". I answered: "No, no! Your photo does...". So what hapeens is that all staff will appear fatter then what they actually are. (As you can imagine, I got already many calls on this... ;-) ) I was wondering how I could change that format (so, basically, strecht up the size of the row). Hope I could explained myself better this time. Thanks in advance, Best regards, Gonçalo G

This was the key line in the post by Emir Liu "If you create a column with picture type in a list, and add the picture by adding the original URL of the picture. The size of the pictures in the list would not change. " That certainly seems to satisfy your original question if it works. Are you saying therefore that the method proposed in the above quote doesn't work? Dear Mike, Thanks for your feedback. I did mark the content of Emir's answer as helpful because indeed it would solve my problem on static lists (though adding extra work). I didn't tell the method doesn't work as Emir described it, but, and as I mentioned before, it didn't answer my initial question that is if it would be possible to change the format of a "Person and Group" type field for the property "name (with picture)" which is used even in OOB dynamic lists (for instance, we have the bulletin board using a discussion Board that uses this. You could answer me, use a different view for the discussion board and then you don't have this problem. I would not indeed as well as I would not have the user's pics. So still I would like to know if there is a way (non programming) to be able to change this default pics view on a list. Maybe is there some XML where we could change this? Thanks in advance. Dear all, I found a workaround on a different post in case you are interested. It is a JScript that can be applied on the page that has the pictures (example, it solves my issue with the dynamic Discussion Board). It is not a solution for my original question, but it does the trick in many cases. At least I am happy with it.
