unc shortcut issue on xp machines
So we've got some users on XP and 7, accessing SharePoint libraries via a UNC path. With windows 7, we're doing something like this:
- open in windows explorer from the toolbar in the library
- go to "make this a favorite" on the explorer left pane
- copy the target out, and then paste that into a new shortcut. people get a challenge box, but they can authenticate and get in.
However, on XP, they can open via windows explorer, but we have no way of creating a shortcut for them. Is there something we're missing here? The explorer view they have open is
http://sharepointserver/folder/allitems.aspx or whatever, but if you put that into a shortcut, it obviously will work like a URL shortcut and not open in explorer.
Any ideas / suggestions?what what what

We have a few clients who use a lot of UNC against SharePoint, so I just tested this for you on my wife's home XP machine. Just think backwards:
On the XP machine, navigate to the library in the browser and use the Actions | Menu Bar to open the library in Windows Explorer. Copy the full UNC path name to the buffer.
In Windows Explorer, go to the intended location for the shortcut, such as the desktop, and right mouse click to create a new shortcut. When asked, paste in the UNC you copied above.
Hope this helps!
