task sequence did not run due to previous advertisment
We have experienced something very odd. we have a task sequence that does the following.
reboot the system
install app1
install app2
install app3
install app4
reboot the system
we deployed this to 3 test machines. it never started. we waited hours and it never started. we had deployed 1 package to these 3 test machines the day before. this package installed and SCCM returned a status message of 10008
for the exit code (success). the advertisement for this single package was set to Never Expire. We deleted this advertisement and then our task sequence kicked off and ran.
what would cause that behavior? it would seem that is a huge bug in SCCM. we tested this again and were able to reproduce it.
it only happens with task sequences, not with single package advertisements.

Maybe the previous task is not cleaned. The following article may help.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2010/09/13/solution-after-a-configmgr-2007-osd-task-sequence-completes-the-client-may-not-automatically-pull-down-policy.aspx
The author lists several reasons why a task sequence does not exit cleanly.
However if your previous task sequence should be able to complete properly, we may need to know the reason. Why do you distribute packages and programs with Task Sequence but not with Software Distribution or Software Update? You may let us know the
content of the previous task sequence.

Thanks but the previous deployment was not a OS task sequence or any task sequence. It was a standard application package deployment. And the package returned a status message of 10008.

Task Sequence not exiting cleanly is not the same as the Task Sequence failing. Maybe you need to restart after applying the package to finish the task?
Additionally, why not deploy the package with Software Distribution?
