steadystate on vista wont allow changes to user settings
I am trying to use steady state on a brand new laptop with vista home basic. Install went fine. I created the user and turned off all restrictions and logged into the userso i can do some basic changes without steadystate blocking me. My problem is that now i cannot make any changes to the user. Error message pops up saying the profile is currently in use. If i restart the computer, i can enter to make changes to the limited user in steadystate but by the time i click ok to save the changes, somehow the profile is in use again even though it isnt. I have turned off the laptop completely and have the same result as restart as expected. Any ideas why steadystate thinks the profile isin useeven though it is not.

Forgot to mention. I have uninstalled and reinstalled steadystate several times. I have also deleted and created new user several times. Neither has succeeded in fixing the problem.

Hi, we can first perform the following steps to check the result for such error message you received when trying to change restrictions for shared user: Suggestion 1: Disable Antivirus applications temporarily Suggestion 2: Install UPClean ----------------------------- Download and install the UPHCLEAN tool on the terminal server to test this issue again. UPHClean monitors the computer while Windows is unloading user profiles and forces open resources to close. Therefore, the computer can unload and reconcile user profiles. This tool can be downloaded from the link below: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&DisplayLang=en Hope this helps!

Thank you for the response. There is no av software on these laptops currently. I tried to download and install the Cleanup Service. Installation failed saying " There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did non finish as expected. Contact your support personnell or package vendor"

Hi, this kind of issue seldom occurs on Windows Vista computer and we can see this error in Windows XP computer. If some resources are still opened by the user, we can see this error when trying to change user settings in Windows SteadyState. UPHclean tool helps to force closing the resources. For Windows Vista, we can try the following steps: 1. Re-build the account in Windows SteadyState. 2. If not work, we may need to reinstall it. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the help. I have figured out the problem and was able to correct it. I assumed the profile was active because some background programs were accessing the user account. Once i temporarily disabled Windows Defender and some factory installed Dell programs i was able to access the user account to set my final restrictions.

HI Sean Zhu, Your thread is two years old but it still rocks. I had a similar issue with a blocked user on Steady State and by installing UPHClean, the issue was resolved. Take care :-)

I was facing this problem on WinXP SP2 based PC. It was really annoying! but thank God, finally I got rid of error message that was popping up whenever I wanted to access user profile for customizing restrictions. The solution I worked out is this: Restart the PC, Re-open the Windows Steady State application, access the target user profile and then check the box labelled "Lock profile to prevent the user from making permanent changes" under General Settings. Clik OK and try to login with the target user account and then log off. Log back in as the administrator and try to access the target user profile using Windows Steady State. This time you shouldn't face any error message such as "This user cannot be edited because the profile is currently in use. Ensure that this user is properly logged off, and try again". Hope this helps!
