Hi galactica, I would recommend reading this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934838/en-gb Step one seems appropriate based on what you have stated above, as the account used for the Central Administration application pool is the SQL service account. During the maintenance period SharePoint will not be available. Changing the SQL Server Service account has no long term impact on SharePoint as long as the services are all available. SharePoint does not use or know about the account that is running SQL Server unless you are reusing/sharing accounts. The account that SharePoint uses to interact with SQL and create new databases is the Farm Administrator account. During the maintenance period SharePoint will not be available. I suppose I interpreted the question slightly differently - I assumed galactica was referring to the account SharePoint uses to interact with SQL. Either way, there will be downtime during the maintenance period given that changing the Farm Administrator acccount requires an IISReset according to the KB article. Let us know how you get on galactica. Benjamin Athawes - Twitter: @benjaminathawes - Blog: http://mossblogger.blogspot.com - Mail: mail at bathawes.com

I found this KB article, 911839. Titled: How to change the SQL Server 2005 service accounts by using the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Provider for Configuration Management. Does any know or have had experience with this script and does it work? I tried it in a maintenance environment I have and followed the instructions. Nothing happened. All I got were pop-up windows. Is there something I need to do to modify the script to get it to work? Thanks

i do not know what account my sharepoint setup is using. there is a strong possibility that is could be using the same service account for SQL in sharepoint. is there anyway to verify this? A SharePoint 2007 environment that has been configured correctly should use several service accounts in order to adhere to the security principle of least-privileges. To determine the identity of your Central Administration Web site (i.e. your farm administrator account), you would take the following steps: Open up IIS manager on a server hosting the Central Administration site Navigate to the Central Administration Web site and go to properties Open up the "Home Directory" tab - on this page you will see an entry for "Application Pool" which should tell you which pool is running your CA site Now find the appropriate application pool, Right click > properties > identity The identity of the application pool is the service account used by SharePoint to access the configuration DB. The KB you are referring to (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911839/en-gb) also states: "we recommend that you use SQL Server Configuration Manager to change the SQL Server service accounts." Perhaps I have misinterpreted this statement, but have you attempted to modify the SQL server account from within the SQL Server 2005 Configuration Manager?Benjamin Athawes - Twitter: @benjaminathawes - Blog: http://mossblogger.blogspot.com - Email: mail at bathawes.com

I tried to use the SQL Server Configuration Manager on my SQL server to try and change the service accounts my SQL server is using. Everytime I make a change attempt I get the error message "The specified network password is not correct [0x80070052]" I contact Microsoft support and they could not resolve that error message. They have me change the service account from the service control panel. And then I made the necessary modifications and changes to get sql to have enough rights so SQL Server could be operational.
