site collection name in sharepoint 2010

Dear all,

I am having http://intranet.com as intranet.

my requirement is I need to add a sitecollection as intranet.com/woody - and have a totally different look and feel(branding). But in sharepoint 2010 I found - we can create only this way http://intranet.com/sites/woody . is this the only way I can create a site collection and have different branding functionality?

any inputs are welcome.

Cheers

All branding is at the site level. You can do branding at the subsite level, although it is more common at the top level site of a site collection. Branding is typically a master page, CSS, images, etc.

If you do want to avoid the /sites/ managed path, then add a new managed path as "Explicit".

  1. Go to Central Administration.
  2. Click Manage Web Applications
  3. Click the web application to add the new path to
  4. In the ribbon click Managed Paths
  5. In the Path box type the name for the path   (Example: "Help")
  6. Change the Type to Explicit Inclusion
  7. Click OK
  8. Go and create a site collection in this web application and select the new path

In order to change the "branding" (which I will also take to mean masterpages) you will likely need to enabled the Publishing feature to be able to set the masterpage. Alternativly you could set the masterpage via powershell if you have reasons to not want to enable the Publishing Feature a the site level.

Also keep in mind that a you can change the branding of subsites, you dont *have* to make them their own Site Collection just to brand them.
