Hi rbayne,
When you got the error, could you please let me know the detailed error information in Event Viewer?
If your WSS 3.0 installation is successful, you could try to run SharePoint products and technologies configuration wizard manually with
Run as administrator option.
And please let me know if this time the wizard is successfully processed.
If the above suggestion is not helpful, please let me know more information for further investigation:
1.
Did you download the
Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 x64 with Service Pack 2
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9FB41E51-CB03-4B47-B89A-396786492CBA&displaylang=en)
from the official site?
If not, please download it and install again.
2.
If possible, could you please try install WSS 3.0 SP2 on another clear machine? And what is the result?
Let me know the result if possible.

Did you reboot the machine after seeing this error?
As Lambert mentioned, can you provide us with more details about which WSS 3.0 did you try to install (32 or 64 bit)? Also would like to know any event viewer entries so that we can help u.

I'm having the exact same issue. Was anyone ever able to come up with a resolution for this?

I have fixed the problem, you should set up sharepoint 2007 sp2.
Office SharePoint Server 2007 supports SQL Server 2008. However, you must install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 or later and Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1 or later in order to use SQL Server 2008. Office SharePoint Server 2007 also supports SQL
Server 2008 R2. Ensure that you have installed Office SharePoint Server 2007 with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later.
thanks!
