hi, How to set up a remote file share before you run Backup and Restore I am trying to use Central Administration tool perform backup and restore functionality to move a site from one server to another. The backup seems to complete successfully on local machine, but when I go to restore thesite on remote machine: It gives an error Directory (restore machine path on domain) \\testserver\backup does not exist or the Sql server service account and the (back up machine path on workgroup). Perth\administrator service account don not have permission to read or write to the back up folder. Sql server 2005 and share point portal server are running on same computer Sql server has window authentication http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/b4dfe06a-40a5-4826-8d4b-1d758a9e621a1033.mspx?mfr=true Above mentioned URL I have confusion how to set point no 3. If you do not already have a remote file share to store the backup files, you must set one up before backing up your environment. 1. (Recommended) Make sure the SQL 'Setup server account' is using a domain account, see SQL Server books online on how to do this. 2. Verify that the remote file share can be accessed from both the SQL Server computer and the Office SharePoint Server 2007 computer. 3. On the remote file server, create a directory and share it out. Be sure to give Write permissions the SQL Server account, the central administrator pool account, and the Timer service account. 4. On the Share Permissions tab of file share Properties, grant the accounts listed below Change and Read rights. 5. On the Security tab of the file share Properties, grant the accounts listed below all the rights except Full Control. Pls help me in this regards.

its like you have a folder where you have placed the back up files. now from the new sevrer when you say restore it will ask for the folder from where it has to take the filesnow when u specify the backup folder which is having the back up. when u do so u need to give permission to the user who are owner of SQL server and timer service.if u have installed all the servers with a single user id then share the folder where backup is with that user id as restore need to access those files)is this what you were refering to?

when you click on restore in the central admin you need to give some folder from where it has to restore right???so there share the folder and give user id in the sharing options and give permission to that user id with which u have installed the SQL.

Backup and Restore (.cmp file) Use this feature when you want to make a backup copy of an entire site or subsite, or when you want to move an entire site or subsite to another server or location. Unlike Web packages, content migrationUnlike Web packages, content migration packages include list data, and you cannot choose to include only specific site elements. Note that you may lose some customizations or settings in the process. For example, the backup file does not include workflows, alerts, and properties stored at the site collection level. The backup file also does not include the Recycle Bin state or objects inside it. To use Backup and Restore, you must have administrator permissions to that site

1.On the File menu, click New.2.In the New dialog box, click the Web Site tab, click General, and then click Empty Web Site.In the Specify the location of the new Web site box, enter the location where you want to restore the backup site.3. You can restore the site to a different server, and you can restore it as either a new top-level site or a subsite under an existing top-level site.Click OK.

If you are hosting the SharePoint environment locally, SharePoint Designer should never be used for backup / restore. Instead you should use stsadm -o backup and stsadm -o restore to backup / restore individual sites, or SQL backup, or the Central Administration backup. Please refer to the following link for more details on the stsadm utility: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1730098&SiteID=1.

question is that i have used custom images in my sites. i have copy and paste in sharepoint designer image folder. how can i find those images in my computer for back up and restore.

Those images most likely are already packaged with the site. Your stsadm -o backup / SQL backup / SharePoint Admin backup should be able to get those. If nothing else do a search starting at c:\program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE for your images. If they aren't listed in one of those images folders (there are 2), then it is embedded in the site.

IMPORTANT.. if you get the error message "you must restore to an empty website", you may have made the mistake I was making...As mentioned, in Central Administration, create a new site, and site collection. When in Central Admin, be sure to select blank site from the list (the default is Team site). Failure to change from Team Site to Blank Site will cause the "you must restore to an empty website" error message when you open Designer and try to restore from a cmp file.
