Hi All, I am currently deploying a search application with sharepoint 2010. Currently I have 6 accounts (standard domain accts)- admin/farm/sqldb/userprofile/mysite/search, with userprofile having replicate directory changes (for getting users from AD). When creating search service application I am using the search account (for search service account , spfarm for the next two sections in that application creation page). Then I add my file share to the content source, start a full crawl, and it starts the process, but results crawled are ZERO (nothing) What level of permission should be given to which account for this purpose of file share crawl, is what I dont understand. Any help appreciated. Thanks a lot!

definitely, coz it says after crawl finishes (the url specified was not reached). means i need to give read access to the file share to the search account ?

As froodien1 mentioned your search crawl account will need only 'Read' access on every fileshare folder and files it needs to crawl. Normally, if it is a permission issue you will get a clear error message on your crawl log for every item it tries to crawl. You will probably get an error like 'Access denied. Verify that Default Content Access Account has access to this respository...' etc. SharePoint Developer

When I crawled the file share with read access account (it did not pick up the active directory rules for accessing folders). Do the accounts used for crawling need other rights as well apart from read access Thanks

The permissions for the read account weren't properly setup by the sys admin Read permissions work fine Regards
