Hi,
Your question is a little bit unclear. Do you mean that you installed WSS 3.0 and you want to put it on the client machine like a VM? (copy and paste stuff)?
Or do you mean that you have created a site for a user on a WSS 3.0 server and now you want the user to be able to view it? Please kindly make it clearer so we can all help you accordingly.

sorry for not being specific.
yes i have created a site for a client on my machine, now i want to put it on the clients machine for him to view it.
July 24th, 2010 6:50pm
Hi again,
I also need to know, is your machine on the same network with your client? Then the word "client", do you mean a customer? Or Are we talking in terminologies of "client and server"? If I assume the latter, the next thing is, is your machine
connected to a network and both your computer and the other person's computer can communicate such as pinging each other successfully, shared folders are visible on both sides, and all those stuffs that show that the computers are talking.
The next thing I want to know is,on what platform are you running the WSS 3.0? And is this client supposed to be accessing the site you created constantly or are you just doing a test. Please shed more light. In the meantime, watch some details from
this link from CBT training
http://www.sharepoint-training-videos.com/Demos/Admin/index.html
If this helps you greatly, don't hesitate to make come back and mark this as an answer.
Happy SharePoint-ing!!!

i'm developing a wss 3 web application with a site collection on my windows server 2003.
when i finished with it the next step is to set it up on another computer of another company(my client/user)
this company will use their own network, server 2003, sql server and so on.
you know when you develop a website you just upload it with an ftp so other people can use it.
but in my case it will be a site that the company will be using for its employee inside their company like intranet.
i have not yet watch the videos but i'm going to.
thnx!

Hi again,
I understand your point now. BUT it may not be best practice for you to setup SharePoint from your end and use FTP to push to the customer's server. You are almost going to 101% run into issues that support does not exist for, and if it does exist, might
give you a migraine in the short and long run.
What you can do, setup the farm in your lab, see it work, test it, AND THEN, go to the customer's site and duplicate your work, procedures, processes and all (this is the best practice). As I speak, I am in the middle of a deployment, and that's what I did.
I don't have physical access to the servers, but remote access and everything is going smoothly. The only currency you'll spend is TIME. So far, it's a whooping success. Don't do the FTP thing, MOSS is unlike conventional web design, it's a whole new world
of logic and programming altogether, even in it's screensaver-like simplicity.

ok thnx!
that ftp thing was just an example, i was not about to do that.
so to see if i understand you. i just have to setup the farm on the client like i did on my own machine?
July 24th, 2010 9:16pm
Hi again,
Yes, you just have to setup the farm on the client just as you did on your machine which was your lab. The only difference would be if the client's environment is not a single box setup. For instance, in your machine if you had it all setup on your physical
system, things would go pretty easily because it's just a single machine setup, so duplicating that on your client's single box will go smoothly just like your machine.
If you are certain your client is going to be a multiple box setup, it will be nice you use a VMs to simulate what you plan to set up for them on your machine. After your tests are done and groovy, then you replicate the same thing for them, it will go groovy
too. In all of the lab on your machine procedure, don't forget to pay attention to documentation of all you did.
In my case, I had fresh boxes to use, so I worked on a fresh box lab. Sometime in the past, a separate project, I had an already existing boxes with stuffs all on them, in my lab I made sure the whole lab was exactly a mirror of the production, used a tool
called vConverter (it duplicated physical servers into lab servers).
They are just logic and principles to keep your project easy and manageable, so things don't run out of control and stay within predictable disorder or chaos or whatever.Guess you understand.

Hi,
This can be achieved by providing a host header value when you are creating a SharePoint web application.
Otherwise you can assign an alternate access mapping to the SharePoint web application from the Central Administartion>>Operations.
You could find more information about SharePoint AAM at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263208(office.12).aspx.

Hello Jenfifi,
The link provided by Aneesh is a good solution especially when your server's name is very obvious. There are some server's name that are subtle enough and people don't know. I hope you know how to get around that? Give attention to this next link,
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261814%28office.12%29.aspx , especially the lower section labelled

HI, ITS ME AGAIN.
ONE THING IS NOT CLEAR. HOW DO I SAVE THE DIRECTORY OF THE WSS3 SITE I MADE TO PUT IT MY CLIENT/USER MACHINE.
OR DO I HAVE TO MAKE A NEW SITE IN IIS AND ADD THE DIRECTORY IN IT?
I'M NEW WITH THIS, THAT'S WHY SO MANY QUESTION :S
July 29th, 2010 6:53pm
Hi,
What does your client's machine have at present? By that I mean what is the system like, does he have the same type of environment you have on your machine, does he have SQL and WSS as well as you do. How is his site collection hierarchies arranged, is it
different from yours, or the same? If yes, on your own machine you will run a backup of the sites and restore on his machine like this: Plus I don't know precisely what you have set up, I could have given you exact scripts but for now I have to assume and
give you the general feel of it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
stsadm –o backup –filename [file path & name]
–url [http://WSSv3Server] -overwrite
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The above backs up the SharePoint site collections that you have on your system to a known location that you have to specify. Let's assume that your server name is
jenfifi and your site collection is /sites/customercare and sitting on
port 2010 . Meaning that if a site were opened up in your browser, the URL will be:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://jenfifi:2010/sites/customercare OR IF IT WERE SITTING ON PORT 80 it will be
http://jenfifi/sites/customercare
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lets assume you plan to save the backup file to your C: drive, a folder called
MacBite with this full path name (C:\MacBite ). Lastly the backup file itself must have a name, so let's decide to call that
customercare.bak . The end result of this UNC is C:\MacBite\customercare.bak
To Back This Site Up For Restore On Your Client's Machine Will Be:
Browse to the stsadm path in the command line, to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN
(you know how to do that right?) . Just in case you don't, from anywhere on your command line do this:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C:\Documents and Settings\jenfifi> cd\ [HIT ENTER KEY]
C:\> cd program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\12\bin
[HIT ENTER KEY]
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN> stsadm –o backup –filename C:\MacBite\customercare.bak –url http://jenfifi:2010/sites/customercare -overwrite
[HIT ENTER KEY]
OR for the second site sitting on port 80, its very much the same:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN> stsadm –o backup –filename C:\MacBite\customercare.bak –url http://jenfifi/site/customercare -overwrite
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DO THIS FOR ALL THE SITES YOU CREATED FOR YOUR CLIENT ON YOUR MACHINE. when you are done, then you do the steps below to restore on your client's machine.
Just like above, use the command line to browse to the same path and run this:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN> stsadm -o restore -url [http://server/site] -filename [backup.dat]
Let's quickly make some assumptions again. Identify the web application you want to restore the backup to. So, on your clients machine, his server name is
happyclient and he has no sites yet or maybe he does, but its sitting on the same
port 2010 or maybe even not, say port 47764 . We'll do both example.
So, you are restoring customer care site to happyclient on port 2010, type from this path:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN> stsadm -o restore –filename C:\MacBite\customercare.bak -url http://happyclient:2010/sites/customercare -overwrite
IF it is to port 47764, its very much the same
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN> stsadm -o restore –filename C:\MacBite\customercare.bak -url http://happyclient:47764/sites/customercare -overwrite
IF it is port 80, that is a little mischievious because when you were doing your backup you didn't need to specify port 80, but now that it is a restore, do specify it like this as well:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN> stsadm -o restore –filename C:\MacBite\customercare.bak -url http://happyclient:80/sites/customercare -overwrite
When you are done restoring all the sites, then run
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN> iisreset /noforce
OR just altogether restart the machine...haaa...haaa...haaa
(you never can tell with all these computer demons lurking around...lol) ...I mean, sometimes things just get crazy and don't work, not in this case though. One thing you will learn as you pull along in your IT walk is the uncertainty and certainty
of configurations that lurk around in your heart when you tell someone to do something and you are not there to physically see things through, especially when they are procedural like this.
Cheers Jenfifi!!!...and em..em..mark this an as answer if it works, someone else need it and so do I...lol

Hello Asebe,
I don't have any myself but I know a couple of links where you could. if you just bing or google that you'll get some results. Here are few, they don't always come free though, so get ready to spend a few: really, you could carry it out on your own, record
it and make it available online.

hi, i'm here again
i have another question. is it possible to change the usereaccount name?
i'm using waindows authentication for my wss3 site. whenever i create a new user on the machine and i add it to the wss3 site. when the user log in the servername appear infront of the username like this: servername\username.
now i dont only want that the screen name only be the username, but also the account name.
the thing is i'm using 2 databases for my site. the wss_content from the wss3 site. and another database that stores all the existing users info. now when i want that the user view only his data i have to use the parameter =User!UserID. but because the log
in user name of the wss3 site is stored in the wss_content db i can not use the =User!UserID because it does not reconize the username in the other database. and i only thought of changeging the accountname to only username. i can not come up with another
solution.
hope this is clear
thnx
