server 2012 sql 2012 sccm 2012 sp1 wsus

We are in the process of setting up the following:

server 2012

sql 2012

sccm 2012 sp1

with WSUS installed.

We are in the process of going through the training manual for 10747A without sccm 2012 sp1 and so far the process is going just fine until we got to software updates.  For some reason WSUS is not talking to SCCM we think.

does anyone have hints on how to install WSUS on server 2012 for sccm?  We added it as a role/feature and we were not sure which to install

WID

or database???

thanks

Frank

Hi,

I normally Always install it using database, but that means that you need to have installed SQL Server 2012 Before installing WSUS, then the database will be created on the SQL server instead of a windows internal database.

Hi,

Great! then I can correct myself the WSUS database is not supported to be Placed on a SQL Server 2012, so considering that you should either Place it on Another SQL or use the WID instead.

Its all on TechNet: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx

For SQL Server specifically click on the Configurations for the SQL Server Site Database link or scroll down to it.

SQL 2012 SP1 does now support SCCM 2012 SP1.

But WSUS don't support SQL 2012 SP1, but it do support without the Service Pack.

WSUS requires one of the following databases:

  • Windows Internal Database (WID)
  • Microsoft SQL Server 20012 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 20012 Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 20012 Express Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Express Edition

Yeah, but WSUS is such a simple DB that using SP1 should be no big deal. "Support" is always somewhat of a subjective word.

True, but in this case I tried to install the WSUS role on SCCM 2012 SP1 onto a SQL 2012 SP1 database and it flat out did not work. Tons of errors in SCCM. Just go with SQL 2012 CU2 or higher. (most current is CU4)

OK,,

Do the following steps since you are going to install a new WSUS on server 2012. It does not matter its SQL 2012 OR SQL 2012 SP1.. Its working with SQL 2012 sp1 as well.

1- Add the WSUS as a Role Service select the WSUS Service and Database.

2- Then on the Content Location give the Location to download the contents. (Make sure you have enough Disk space and the Drive is formatted in NTFS.)

3- Once the WSUS role completely added under the server manager Notification pane it will show additional configuration required and just select it and click run to configure the required settings. It will create the necessary WSUS content files with the required permissions. (It will create TWO folders named as UpdateServicesPackages and WsusContent)

4- Now once it completed you have completed the installation of WSUS Server.

5- Then Don't DO Any Configuration in WSUS server. we have to do all settings using SCCM sever.

6- Open the SCCM SP1 console and Go to Overview/Site Configuration/Sites. Then right click the server and select the Add Site System Roles.

7- On the General Page make sure you selected the correct server and under Active Directory Membership the indicating details are correct an click Next to continue.

8- Under proxy setting key in the proxy server setting if you have any proxy in your environment and click next to continue.

9- on the next page will be the System Role Selection  select the Software Update Point and Click Next

10-Under Software Update Point Click the Second option for WSUS to use Ports 8530 and 8531 for client communication. (This is the default setting for WSUS on Server 2012). Click Next.

11- If you use Proxy server specify the details on the proxy and Account Setting Page to communicate the SUP role with Proxy server. Click Next

12- On the Synchronize Source page select the Synchronize from Microsoft Update Server. Click Next.

13- On the Synchronizing Schedule page schedule as you want.

14- On the Supersedence Rules leave the default setting as it is and click Next

15- Under classification page select the classification you want t download and click next

16- On the products page select the products and click next.

17- select the language as you want and click next

18- on the summary page just verify the configuration you have done and click next to install the SUP role installation and once it done close the window.

19- Go to  Overview/Site Configuration/Servers and Site System Roles and make sure the SUP role is showing under the Site system Roles the right hand site pane.

20- Check the System Status UNDER Monitoring page and Open the Trace Log Tool and Open the Log call WSUSCtrl and verify the connectivity is success in WSUS and SCCM.

21-Once it success go to Software Library/Software Update/ Right Click on top of All software Updates and click Synchronize Software Updates.

22- again go to Trace Log tool and open the WSYNCMGR.LOG and check the synchronization is successfully processing.

23- After the Sync is complete just open the All Software Update field and the right hand side you can see the downloads.

Thanks

Hasitha

A little bit of an older post here, but what errors? I've installed it on SQL 2012 SP1 no problem and with no special configuration.

Yes. You are correct Jason. No need any special configuration. It's very straight forward.

With reference to your point number 1

"1- Add the WSUS as a Role Service select the WSUS Service and Database.", It asks to connect to SQL database

Should I configure and connect to SQL 2012 Database with Instance name at this stage ?  (otherwise there is no NEXT button)

Did you select the WID database option?? If yes untick it and select wsus service and database option only and click next to continue. Then give a location path to download the content files.

I have a blog post here

http://www.gerryhampsoncm.blogspot.ie/2013/04/sccm-2012-sp1-step-by-step-guide-part.html

It details the full installation and configuration of SCCM 2012 SP1 Software Updates using SQL 2012 and Windows Server 2012. The first section has screenshots for the WSUS Role installation.

I am also trying to get Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012 SP1 to work with WSUS -  when I launch the post-installation tasks, I get this message:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Log file is located at C:\Users\administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\tmpECDF.tmp (the log file simply says the same thing as the "fatal error" message below)
Post install is starting
Fatal Error: Since the SQL instance name does not already exist in the registry and the WID role service is not installed, the instance name must be specified on the command line.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not have a named instance for either CM 2012 SP1 or WSUS - just the default one.  When I installed the WSUS role, it seemed to recognized the locally installed SQL instance.  I am running CM 2012 SP1 with CU1.

It seems like there should be a workaround for this -  is there a powershell command that would finish the post-installation task successfully?  Or, what if I were to pre-create the SUSDB database beforehand?

Thanks for any help you can give!

That's probably better addressed in a WIndows Server or WSUS forum as it really has nothing to do with ConfigMgr. It's clearly getting confused about your SQL instances. Are you sure you don't have any named instances?
April 23rd, 2013 4:31pm

No, it's just the default instance.  I think at this point I will create a SUP/WSUS server separately.  Probably better for performance anyway.

I did exactly the same way and still never got WSUS synchronization to work. I finally installed SCCM 2012SP1 on Windows 2008 R2 server with MS SQL 2008 r2 SP2.

I never found any helpful hints on any of blogs or sites. I hope Windows-Noob creates step-by-step process soon.

Your post is great Gary, however it did not work for me. I had CAS, PRM and SEC sites installed. It always worked for Windows 2008 R2 combo but NOT with SCCM2012SP1/Windows 2012/ MS SQL 2012 SP1. WSUS did not synchronize to download updates.
