sccm 2012 r2 console, devices, column layout and order is reset to default

Hi :)

I am running sccm 2012 r2 console on sccm server. I've added some columns into Assets and Management, Devices (beside default name, client, site code, client activity) ie. client version, endpoint protection enabled etc. I've left console open up and running and after some when I get back, column layout is reset to default 4 columns :(

Can you fix please that system center consoles remember column layout and order ? (sc vmm 2012 r2 does not remember only when you add column maximum memory). :(

Is this after a log off and on or during a session. Layout settings are stored in the roaming profile under C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ConfigMgr10\consolesettings.dat.

Hi,

Here are some steps for your reference.

Hi Paul,

I've already wrote: "I've left console open up and running and after some when I get back, ..."

I have RDP session to sccm vm and console is up, running and maximized. I've minimized (not disconnect, but it is same) RDP session and when I back columns are revert to display only four default columns :(

About: ver. 5.0.7958.1000

Thank you Xin, very interesting, I will evaluate steps from article soon as possible.

I do not have problem to add some or all columns, I have problem that after some time added columns are lost from view (and console is running, just left open console) so something doing some kind of refresh reset to deault value - layout.

Best regards

Hi :)

Here are some news. I've run console onto client computer with Windows 8.1.

I've added some columns and left console up and running. After some time there is no reset do default..

Also, I've tried to close console and run again and all added columns are on their own places.

But, before I've left workplace I've turned off console and today when I came back and fire up console again all columns are lost and view have only three default columns.

So, it really something reset console view to default but I can not figure out what it is :(

This has to be something to do with the consolesettings.dat file. Do you have folder redirection set up on the AppData\Roaming folder? I have managed to recreate your issue using the following method:

1. Add in some columns to the Devices view.

2. Go to the \\server\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ConfigMgr10 and deleted the consolesettings.dat file.

3. Relaunced the console and the columns have reset to default.

4. Set the columns again, closed down the console and the .dat file is recreated.

5. Re launch the SCCM console and the settings are retained.

I suggest you check either the C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ConfigMgr10\consolesettings.dat. or \\server\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ConfigMgr10\consolesettings.dat and the time stamp of the file. Do some tests and recreate the steps above.

Somewhere along the line your dat file is being removed with your bespoke settings.

Hi Paul and thank you for your suggestions. I've tried all steps you've wrote and results are same.

I do not use folder redirection.

It seems that untill I've find cause of problem, solution is to backup and restore consolesettings.dat file if and when columns are reset to three default view.

Might be worth running a procmon and attempt to isolate what is removing the file.

Hi Paul

I've observe what is going on and saw that consolesettings.dat is not changed until I've exit from configuration manager console and after that is written with new timestamp. However, before that exit from SCCMC occure, columns order was reset to default :(

Can I left ProcMon to "watch" for changes over the night because of lot "captured" other events ?

You probably want to discard a lot of processes from the capture but I can't see why not. You could then search based on the .dat file

Hi Paul and thank you for your answer.

I will try to capture what is going on and post results here after check.

I've also noticed that console ui when is maximized overlap in front "taskbar" (which I've set to be autohide). If I need something from taskbar I need to minimize console first :( Same thing is also with VMM console :(

Best regards

I've had this problem since day one with the SCCM  2012 console and the problem still persists with SCCM 2012 R2.  I've never been able to isolate the problem however.  Surprised more people aren't posting about this issue as its happened in every SCCM 2012 customer environment I've ever worked in.  Hope this gets fixed someday...

Yes, I know this is an old post, but Im trying to clean them up. Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?

Since no one has answer this post, I recommend opening  a support case with Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) as they can work with you to solve this problem.
