running a task sequence on a workgroup machine without installing SCCM-Client
i have to run a task sequence on a machine that is not in domain. it is in a workgroup. i cant join that machine to the domain. but i have the scenario that i have to capture the image of that machine without joining it to domain. and also i cant install the SCCM client on that machine. it is a big ask but need to figure out...... Just create a capture media: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb694129.aspx.Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

What's the exact problem? Why can't you create a capture media? You can install the Admin Console on almost any machine and create the media there. There's no alternative if you want to capture that given physical machine, but you can let ConfigMgr create an automated build&capture machine though.Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

i have to capture the image through PXE boot not through a capture media as this the demand.Gaurav Ranjan

So why don't you just create a build and capture task sequence then? That can be kicked off using PXE boot.Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

yes, i have to create that but how that that task sequence will be advertized to that machine and how that machine will be discovered by the SCCM. that machine is not in domain so i can't install SCCM client and that machine will not be able to make it presence in the Active directory domain and will not be discovered by the SCCM. so how would i run that task sequence on that workstation exactly that i want to know in all of my posts. thanksGaurav Ranjan

PXE booting does not require the ConfigMgr agent -- that would be a chicken-egg problem. PXE booting delivers a boot image (WinPE) that drives the process. This boot image contains equivalent client agent functionality that enables running the task sequence. With R2 you can advertise to unknown computers or you can pre-create a system resource with the Import Computer functionality and place this resource in a collection where you've advertised the TS.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

you just mean to say that i should import the computer through its MAC address to a collection and simply advertize my capture TS to that collection. the client machine will auto matically fetch that TS and my capture TS will start running on that machine. am i right? but as far as i am concerned this is applicable to only BARE metal scenario where you are creating a new machine for deployment. i have an already existing computer which i have to capture. the steps which you have said are the basic ones and the things which anyone will start with. i also did that but it didnt worked. the task sequence didn't run on my client machine(workstation). still my question is how can we run a capture TS on a workgroup machine without installing ConfigMgr Client? how that machine will be discovered by SCCM as the machine has no entry in the Active Directory?i know swimming but got stuck in a muddy place. do the network discovery method will work to discover the workstations? thanksGaurav Ranjan

Existing machine: use capture media. Creating a new reference computer (that is automatically built and captured afterwards): PXE boot (or boot from media). Those are basically the ways to achieve want you want.Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

Repeatedly: there is no alternative (given the limitations that you have).Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de
