rule target
when you create a rule it ask you tu put the "rule target" what it means? is where the rule is executed?? for example you select a group with the servers where you want to run that rule?
December 16th, 2010 9:44pm

This is asking you for a Class (an object type) for which the rule should run. Only computers with that object type will run the rule. So if you pick Windows Server 2008 Operating System, only computers with Windows 2008 would run the rule. It can be confusing, but an object type is sometimes called by different names. Type, Target and Class are three words meaning the same thing....a type of object. All rules, monitors and tasks you create must have a target. And that target must be a Class....but should NEVER be a group.Pete Zerger, MVP-OpsMgr and SCE | http://www.systemcentercentral.com

Hi Just to add to Petes comments: Why targeting groups for rules \ monitors \ discoveries does not work: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=125048 Note - you can target overrides at groups (and is in fact generally good practice to do so). Microsoft also have a targeting pdf which should help explain how to target rules \ monitors: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=125048 Cheers GrahamView OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Doh! Too early on a Friday morning. Thanks for pointing it out. Here is the correct link for the first "why group targeting doesn't work": http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2007/11/14/targeting-series-part-2-why-targeting-a-computer-group-fails.aspxView OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Still the same, you need to choose a class/type for target. It is good practice to create a disabled rule/monitor targetted on a class (as specific as possible) and then enable/override it for a group. Rob Korving http://jama00.wordpress.com/

ok thanks!! I have to target a synthetic transaction... how can i do?
December 20th, 2010 3:26pm

Hi It depends on the synthetic transaction. Items like OleDB, Web and TCP have a watcher node - so you specify a target server as you run through the wizard (e.g. the database or a url) and then you specify a watcher node that will be test access to the target. For the Service template - you are asked to "target" a group but this is misleading. It doesn't actually target the group even though that is what the window states. This is for the discovery of the process and not for the underlying monitors and rules. An object discovery is created disabled but with a pre-defined override of enabled = true against the group.
