remove agent listing from DPM 2012

Hello.

We currently have a production environment running DPM 2010 on Server 2008. It is backing up our Intranet server among other things. I set up a Server 2012 box with DPM 2012 for testing. When I tried to add the Intranet server, I realized that I could not install an agent, but needed to 'attach' the existing one. When I tried that, I got an error message because the server is currently protected by another DPM server. The Intranet server is now listed on the DPM 2012 Management tab under Unprotected computers, status is disabled.

I want to remove the entry, but the only option that I see says 'Uninstall'.

Will that remove the agent from the Intranet server, thereby removing the ability of DPM 2010 to continue backing up this server? If that happens, will reinstalling the agent from DPM 2010 keep the associated backups, or will the new agent installation have a different ID and therefore new backup sets? currently DPM 2010 is backing up the server correctly, so I don't want to make any changes that would change that.

Hello.

I have a production backup system with DPM 2010 running on server 2008. I set up a test system using DPM 2012 on server 2012. In the test environment I tried to attach the protection agent of a currently protected server, which failed because DPM 2010 is currently backing up that server. Now in DPM 2012 I see an entry for that server (disabled) under unprotected servers. I want to remove that entry on DPM 2012, but the only option that I see is uninstall, which I assume would remove the agent completely from the server, thereby breaking the backup protection on DPM 2010. how can I clean up 2012 without messing up 2010?

Sorry, wrong forum. Can someone move this to DPM for me?

Hi,

You can use the DPM power shell script called Remove-ProductionServer.ps1 which will remove the machine from DPM without removing the agent from the protected server.  It will prompt for DPMServer and PSServer - enter the FQDN for the PSname you want to remove.

example:

PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin> Remove-ProductionServer.ps1
DPMServer:: dpm1
PSName:: 8560w.contoso.com
WARNING: Connecting to DPM server: dpm1
Removed ProductionServer successfully
PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin>

Hello Mike.

When I try to run this script (from the test server tx-dpm-2012), I get an error message saying "Unable to connect to tx-dpm-2012 (ID: 948)". The first time I did not open DPM itself, so I opened it and tried again, same result. I then went to Services and made sure the DPM service was running, and it was so I tried again, same result. I also tried using the FQDN for the server, same result.

Hi,

OK - different issue but try the following to troubleshoot connectivity issue:

Open DPM powershell and run the following command:

PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin> connect-dpmserver tx-dpm-2012

Using notepad, open the C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Microsoft System Center 2012 Data Protection Manager\DPMCLI0Curr.errlog and see why the connection failed.

Ok, that log file indicated a connection was denied because I'm not an administrator (which I am), so I tried right clicking on the shortcut for powershell and chose "Run as admininstrator" and it successfully connected. I then ran the Remove-ProductionServer command which was also successful.

Thank you!!
