permission wouldn't stay
I have created a site collection and the owner reports back the permission he assigned to users wouldn't stay. They
have reverted automatically back.
Another case, any time one owner removed users, they re-appear after a few days, but not always in a predictable frequency.
This is on MOSS 2007.
Any idea what would have caused this kind of behaviors? Thanks!

Hi,
Do you get any entries in ULS logs? Check your DB jobs whether they restore any backups.
Do you have timer jobs created that interacts with site permissions?
I hope this will help you out.
Thanks, Rahul Rashu

Rahul,
Thank you for the reply.
There is no db backup/restore, and this ULS logs thing is new to me. I need to dig through it to see if there is anything. Any particular entry I should be looking for?

You're not clear on what it means to remove users. Remove from what? The Site Collection, a group, an individual assignment to a site, list, or item.
So, provide more info, and maybe a little background on your security paradigm.Steve Clark, MCTS | Twin-Soft.com

in Sharepoint it is possible to assign permissions to the following securable objects: SPListItem, SPFolder, SPList, SPWeb. On what exact securable object from this list permissions are reverted?
About re-appeared users: where they are re-appeared? If you mean Site Actions > People and groups > Site permissions, then check what permissions they have here. Users may appear here with Limited Access permissions even if they were not added explicitly
with some permissions to SPWeb (e.g. if user have read permission only on some list).Blog - http://sadomovalex.blogspot.com

Thank you all for the replies.
Here are more details. Let us focus on second case, which is "permission change wouldn't stay".
One site collection owner reported that he removed other owners from the owners group. Then days later, they were back.
The site inherated permission from its parent. First I thought other owners from parent or this site added the removed ones back. But no body said they did.
Then I added myslef in as owner, then removed the ones in question. The change sticked for several days, then this morning, the
removed owners reappeared in the owners group with full control permission.
Last time I checked, mid yesterday afternoon, they were not there.
I am going to look into logs and Timer Jobs. Last night, we had large number of jobs succeeded.
If you come up with any ideas, let me know. Thanks!

Now I have reproduced the bug myself. Wow!
I did the removal members from owners. Then I worked on creating a new site collection by restore a .cmp file. After the new restore completed, those members are back to
the list!
The backup and restore are on a totally different branch of the site. How did that impact the whole farm?
