people search not providing correct users

Good Morning,

I am experiencing a couple of strange behaviours on my SharePoint farm:

1) When I search for a user writing his name or surname, I manage to find him.

If I try to search him by department, I cannot find him. I tried to test the query with the query builder and in that case, I can find the user by department but when I go back to the web part and test again the search, the user is no more available.

2) I am not able to find 2 users (male and female) with the same surname. Yesterday I tried to search both of them by surname and the output was only 1 user (the male one). Yesterday in the afternoon I tried again and i could find only the other one (female). If I search them by name or division, I can find them with no problems.

Have you ever experienced these issues?

Thanks in advance

Daniele

edit reason: the environment is set up with ADFS authentication and all the users that I am trying to search are in the UPA. Their attributes are mostly the same each other.

Hi,

#1. I recommend to search with the Department managed property and then check if the issue still occurs.

For example, if a user has HR filled in his user profile, then we can search like this: Department:HR.

#2. I tested the same scenario in my environment, and all the users with the same surname displayed in people search results.

I recommend to check the things below:

1. Make sure that the Start addresses for user profiles in content source are right and users have permission to view the user profiles.

2. Reset the search index and then do a full crawl.

Best regards,

Victoria
