not being able to the check in a document in a library (local drafts)
Hi,In a computer,(so far only noticed in only one) cannot check in back documents. In a document library:1.- the document name (doc.xlsx) is clicked.2.- it prompts "do you want to chek out and edit?" -yeswith ticked "use my local drafts folder"3.- The file is edited. 4.-try toclose the document5.-Excelprompts "do you want to save the document?" -yes6.-Excelprompts "other users cannot seethe changes if you dont check in. Do you want to check in?" -yes7.- Then, excel does not closes andwhen trying the closes we go back to step 4 (until "NO" it is replied to "Do you want to check in?")8.- if we use the SharePoint interface to check it in, it promps "This document was checked out to your local drafts folder but he local copy could not be checked in to the site. Close any application that is is editing the document" (this is prompted even if the excelandany other application is closed)The only posibility is todiscard check out and loose the changes. He only has Office 2007 installed ( i read in other forums that it may be becasue of having several office versions installed in the same machine).Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks!-Cris

Hello, Im guessing the operating system of your client machine you use to login sharepoint is Windows Vista. If so, please disable the web client service on the Vista client machine, then try again and let me know the result. If the problem still exist, please feel free to let me know. >He only has Office 2007 installed ( i read in other forums that it may be becasue of having several office versions installed in the same machine). Unless this is a new machine that had Office 2007 installed right at the beginning, there is still the possibility that unbeknown to the user some remnants of an earlier Office 2003 level application are still there. It won't necessarily be something like Word 2003 or Excel 2003, it might be something like a spelling checker for a different language.I'm not saying that this is the reason for your problem but unless it's a completely new machine on which Office 2007 has been installed at once, don't 100% dismiss any possibility that there might be some hangover from an office 2003 level application still there.

Iam also experiencing the error "This document was checked out to your local drafts folder but the local copy could not be checked in to the site. Close any application that is is editing the document". I am working with a .mpp file. If I don't enforce check out offiles (settings), I can still make changes and see version history. But since multiple people will be working in this file, I need to enforce file check out.Using:SharePoint MOSS 2007I'm running XP Pro (version 2002, SP3 v.5667). This machine was newly built with Office 2007. BUT. . . I am running MS Project and Visio 2003.Sodo I need to run someMS updateto fix this on my local machine? What update would I need to run? For other users in my company who are only using Office 2003, would they see this issueas well? Or is this a Office 2003 vs Office 2007 conflict? My company has not coverted everyone over to 2007 yet. This is the only solid posting I've found regarding this issue. Is therea Knowledge entry on the MS site that explains what this issue is in more detail? I'd like to forward to our IT department so they could start fixing this for others before it is an issue. Thanks!Leslie

I also have a user that is experiencing this problem. His is working with Office 2007 (Excel in this case) on WSS 3.0 SP1. The site does enforce checkout. The user makes changes after opening (not downloading) the file and then tries close Excel. It asks if he wants to save changes, yes, it says it must be checked in, he says yes. He gets the above error and Excel won't close.Clearing the "Use local draft folder" checkbox on opening seems to prevent the behavior but it's the default so if this is a problem we'll have it again. There hasn't been any activity on this thread since Feb. Any chance anyone has an answer now?

I belive that the culprit here isnt the office versions but the cache folder, try empty cache from your client browser and then try i should work, when we save something in local drafts folder the file makes a copy on the local machince and then sync it to the server. lot of time cache files dont get synced properly and this could cause the issue

I was just getting that error and also all my sharepoint documents were opening read-only. However after following these steps I can edit my documents: 1) Clear browser cache. 2) Check your document out (without using local drafts folder), then check it back in. 3) Open the document as usual for editing.
