multiple unnecessary/unwanted password prompts when opening documents
After clicking on an URL in a document library that points to an Office file (I've tested it with Excel and Word) several unwanted and unnecessary (as I site admin and owner I've the permissions for this file for sure!) password prompt appear. It does not matter if I type in and save my credentials, one second later the same password dialog appears, and it does not matter (!!) if I click Cancel or enter my credentials - the document is opened in any way! So why does this prompt appear? This does not make sense! Even worse: when I save the document the credential prompt appears twice and it does not matter if I enter it, save it or don't enter and just click on Cancel! What's this? I've fiddlered it and see that winword and svchost open a new process. Thos programs seem to be responsible for the prompts, but the prompts are not necessary, as I can click them easily away. My configuration: Client: Windows 7 and Windows XP (patch level is unknown) Server: MOSS 12.0.0.6327 The web application has Integrated Windows authentication with NTLM as authentication type and client integration is enabledThe site (https://mysharepoint.com ) is added to the local intranet zone and automatically passing the user credentials in the intranet zone is enabled, but it's the same behaviour even when add this site to the intranet zone The WebClient service runs on the client and starts automatically Any ideas or suggestions how to resolve this annoying prompt?

Thanks for the hint. I was playing around too much with this settings, so I missed that I added the site to the internet zone and automatic logon is only activated for the intranet zone! argh...

Now I'm sure that I can reproduce a case with the above mentioned IE 8 settings and multiple, unnecessary password prompts appear! site URL is in the local intranet zone authentication: automatic logon only in intranet zone use integrated Windows authentication service WebClient is started and start type is automatic The password prompt appears THREE times and in every case you can click Cancel and the document opens any way! Isn't this stupid? I've fiddlered it and marked every time a password prompt appears with a red line:

Hi Diana, When you using a FDQN to acces SharePoint with a Windows 7 client, you need to configure the Webclient parameters. cfr:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/6dd95d43-c9fc-448d-8fe1-ae9da22f20e1 Regards, Johan
