moving a catergorized library w/many files into another doc library..can this be done?
Hi, I'm very very new to SharePoint. Our server is being decommissioned and my company needs to move many many files to the new server. These files will be used for our new Intranet site. I created a catergorized lib to hold alot of files as this can be easier to display in a web part. However, I now want to move this lib into another so that I can maintain a semblence of order behind the scenes. Can this be done? Or is there an easier way to display 100's of files on a web page?

Hello, Yes you can. It appears you have a single server setup. If however you want to the destination server to have a different structure from the source that will be a different thing entirely. Basically, you want to decommission a server and use a new one, simply do a backup from the old and restore into the new. This means: 1. You MUST work with the users in mind . Do you want to start giving them new URLs when you are done? (Not advised) If yes, go ahead and set up the new box as your SharePoint aura leads you. Back up the old server and restore into the new using this helpful link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262412%28office.12%29.aspx . Read it through, go through every link provided there, get informed and do it (in a test lab first of course)! 2. If you want to maintain the naming conventions and ports of your old server, set up your new box using the old as a reference. Set it up and leave the site collections blank. When all is done perform your backup and restore just like the one above, don't forget your test environment as well and don't forget your documentations of what you did. You can consult the video here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc424947%28office.12%29.aspx Cheers! You've only got one life; help as many people as you can, and enjoy it while it lasts.
