missing or corrupt file
2007 r3 I have a new hp 6200 64bit system that I am trying to get to work with one of my OSD's, everything appears to work just fine until the reboot after configmgr gets installed then I get this: windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \\windows\system32\config\system The image is a standard Windows XP 32 bit. Note: I had no problems deploying Win 7 32bit to this same system, now I just need it to work with XP as well. Any ideas?

When I F8 and try to get to the command prompt it just keeps rebooting, can't get to smsts.log, no bluescreen. Sorry for the mess. And excuse my ignorance. I have the script but exactly how do I use it? From the task sequence > edit what exactly do I do? What affect will this have on existing successful deployments?
July 27th, 2011 2:18pm

I've created the package and program, the program is set to run HAL.wsf, and set to run before “Setup Windows and Config.Mgr” does this sound right, do I need something different on the program run command?

well that failed, either because I have SP1 or the run command is wrong.

Did you also put ZTIUtility.vbs (part of MDT) in that package (as mentioned in the article)? My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/ Follow me on twitter: pvanderwoude

No I didn't, I saw that but did not understand nor am I familier with that utility. Can you please provide more detail. I am not using MDT just strickly SCCM. Thanks

ok, I have both scripts in the package, what should the program command line be? cscript.exe hal.wsf??? Do I have to edit the ZTIUtility.vbs ??? Help.

try a Run Command Line step which is cscript.exe hal.wsf and no, don't edit the ZTIutility script My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

verify in your smsts.log that the hal script actually runs, does it ? it should state it..., if not, mount a winpe usb key or whatever and boot into pe and get the smsts.log, post the failures here please My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

ok then find out why, usual reason is it can't find the file because it's not pointed to correctly (not in the package, or different file name or something) My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

does anyone have step by step instructions on how to deploy the hal.wsf script using SCCM 2007 R3 packaging? Obviously I am doing something wrong, here is what I have done so far. 1.) Created a package containing hal.wsf and ZTIUtility.vbs 2.) Create a program from that package with execute command cscript.exe hal.wsf ( admin rights, no interaction) 3.) Add to site distribution point and wait for successful replication, verify folder is on SCCM secondary server. 4.) Inserted it in Task Sequence after Apply Device Drivers and before Setup windows and ConfigMgr 5.) Then I PXE boot and everything works right up to that step, then just wants to self F8 and keep rebooting. I can not get into command prompt.

no need to create a program, do as follows instead 1, create a package with the two files in it, no program, 2. distribute it to your dp's, verify its distributed (package status) 3. add a Run Command Line step which has cscript.exe hal.wsf and in this step for Package, browse to the package you created above keep 4 and 5 as before cheers niall My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

i'M TESTING IT NOW BUT WHILE i HAVE YOU i'D LIKE TO ASK SOME QUESTIONS REGARDING YOUR sccm GUIDES. wHILE WAITING FOR THIS FORUMS Response I started the task of your guide to deploying XP SP3, I hadn't done the build and capture method yet so that was interesting. My first question is why distribute the boot image to both the smspkg and smspxeimages folders? I noticed at boot it uses the non pxe folder. Secondary, instead of using the background image I selected its now black, any ideas. ok - look like both tests just finished the hal method ended in error (0x80070002) and the build and capture method ended with a blue screen I'm very frustrated, why can I build this from an XP CD but not SCCM, why does it work fine with Win 7 64 and 32 bit. Very frustrated.

boot images in SCCM 2007 need to be distributed to both the standard distribution points AND the PXE dp's, that's just a design decision. as regards your current error can you please post the entire smsts.log file somewhere that I can download and i'll take a look, i understand your frustration but it should be with XP rather than SCCM, as that is where the problems lay (it's an old OS which isnt as easy to deploy as windows 7 as you are noticiing), XP requires more hand holding particularly with the HAL and storage. cheers niall My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

fast response thanks, and thanks for hanging in there with me. 1.) Just to be clear, are you saying that I should copy my PE boot image to both folders for my existing production environment? So far i have only done this to the smspxeimage folder, I read that somewhere. So right now my collection has 2 boot images and it only see sthe one from the guide. 2.) Any idea whythe background is balck, that would be nice to have our comany logo rather than the sccm logo. 3.) So to getthe log I just need to set to enable command support, replicate, F8 to command line and copy command to... where? And I guess fo rthe sake of this forum I should focus on the hal approach right? Thanks again.

1. yes both boot images (x86/x64) need to be on both the STANDARD distribution points and SMSPXE distribution points 2. double check you specified a correct somefile.bmp 3. copy it to a usb key/network share/wherever that suits you, having the file means that you can debug the issue properly cheers niall My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I am experiencing the same problem on a particular model Dell and would love to know how you resolved this.
