is there any way to tell if a column in form library is form field, library column, site column, customised, etc...?

Hi all,

Just wondering if there is any way to tell what the origin and or history of a field/column in a Form Library is?

presumably promoted fields are the ones that are in the "Library Settings" page that are unmodifiable (no link)

but I can't see any way to identify/differentiate:

  • sealed columns (whatever they are)
  • columns created JUST for this list/library
  • columns created for this site / collection
  • if these have been modified/customised - you seem to be able to "modify" columns in subsites but the changes don't propagate... and when you change them there aren't any clues that what is a text field in one site/area is a choice in another)

so... are there any tricks to figuring this

Hi noJedi- unfortunately there's no easy way to determine all that. You can go into the advanced settings and check "allow management of content types." That will show you what content types/site columns are being used. Then you'll have your regular columns below those in the "colums" section. You should be able to determine what columns were added specifically for the library/list there, besides the standard columns that come with all lists/libraries.

This was very helpful thanks!

allow management of content types - I notice that it disables the ability to EDIT the form template, that's a bit strange... I guess that's why its off by default.

This alone helps me a lot in my current troubleshooting.

I assume that if you really wanted to get this info, the scripts or custom code would be the way to go - I'm totaly not "there yet"... but thanks heaps for the info!
