is there a way(powershell) to find out sharepoint version information from backup (bak)file

Can you pls elaborate which kind of backup file you are referring to?

When you try to use the "Restore-SPSite" command on Sharepoint Management Shell, the error message shows you the sharepoint version of the backup.

You can restore the backup file in sharepoint management shell using Restore SPSite command but, it might show u a <nativehr><nativestack> error and may not show you the version of the backup in the command window as shown  at the link below:

 You can use ULS Log viewer and check the Log for that error notification which must contain your current SharePoint version and the backup SharePoint version.
