install sccm 2012 R2 client on Microsoft Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro

Hi all,

How can I install sccm client on Microsoft Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro machine to manage it? We have 255 point of sale machines which have Microsoft Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro  and we need to manage them using SCCM 2012 R2 installed in the head quarter data center. What are the requirements? Do they need to be joined to domain? How to install the SCCM client on them? If we can install SCCM client on them without joining them to domain, can they have system center 2012 R2 endpoint protection client managed and updated by sccm (as that SCEP client is installed alongside with the sccm client).

Yes, you can install the ConfigMgr client on those devices and the requirements are similar to normal devices. The devices don't have to be domain-joined to install the ConfigMgr, but that might make your life a bit easier with discovering and pushing the ConfigMgr client. Also, once the ConfigMgr client is installed it can also be used to manage the SCEP agent on those devices.

You can push the SCCM client on those devices. But because they are not domain-joined (and so cannot be discovered by the site server), you need to manually create a CCR file for each of those client devices and put them on the client push inbox.

You can read the process here (under the section "Use a CCR file to manually trigger the client installation").

Also, because the client devices are not domain-joined, you need to use a client push installation account that is a local admin user on the client device.

You can use ClientPushGenerator.exe tool from C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Configuration Manager\AdminConsole\bin (path may change depends on the installation folder) to generate CCR and do client push.

So I can install the client manually on those clients -procedure shown here: http://www.jesperhassing.com/?p=56 - and approve the client installation in sccm console and that is it? What about those PoS machines IP subnets; do I need to add their IP subnets in the boundary group in SCCM?

Yes, if you want to control where content will be downloaded from.
