importing from Thunderbird into msOutlook

Is there a way to get msOutlook to import settings, contacts and emails from a Thunderbird client?

If not, do I need to export each Thunderbird folder to EML and then import those one-by-one into msOu

Hi TechSvcMgr,

As I know, MS-Outlook does not support mbox file format (Thunderbird emails) to import directly in it, so you have to go for any third party utility which makes this task possible.

This kind of utility is designed to convert the default structure of data file into other compatible and usable formats. Take an example; SysTools MBOX Outlook Converter is one of them which can easily change the entire database (all the folders) of MBOX files into PST.

But as these are the third party utilities, I would suggest you to first get aware about their functionality and working (use demo version if its available) before purchasing it.

At last, pay for the things which really seems can accomplish your task.

Note: The above suggestion for any third party utilities is behalf on my personal experience so risk at your own risk.

Thanks

Short answer: No. Migrating from TBird is a contorted process if you try and do it manually.

There are countless 3rd party utilities for TBird/Outlook migration. One program I would suggest to review would be

Aid4Mail (Fookes Software)
http://www.aid4mail.com/

The above is provided as "information only" and you should do your own due diligence before finalizing any purchase. Have no vested interest in either the company or product - have only seen positive reviews from other people regarding this product making the transition to Outlook a quick and easy process.

You can easily import your Thunderbird emails and contacts to MS Outlook by converting Thunderbird Mbox file to Outlook PST files. For the same, you can try out the following tools.

http://www.stellaroutlooktools.com/scan/mbox-to-pst.php

http://www.mboxtopstconvertertool.com/

http://www.nucleustechnologies.com/mbox-to-pst.html

http://www.pcvita.com/outlook-magic.html

These tools efficiently converts Thunderbird mail files (in MBOX' format) to Outlook-importable PST files as they have advertised.

I would advise you to try the demo version of these tools before making the purchase.

This made the cut to final 3 but has a couple of problems including a major fail: It can only be run as an administrator!

Ugh , what an ugly process this was. after prelims had it down to 3 candidates: kernel, stellar and sys-tools.

kernel turned out to be a no go as it will only run as an administrator - what is up with that?

Stellar was interesting and its free mode convinced me that it could accomplish the task. unfortunately its interface was confusing and it crashed while dealing with the tbird folders.

Sys-tools left me wanting more from its demo version but it appeared it would be able to handle the task. It also seemed more complete than Stellar in its capabilities - but it cost twice as much as Stellar.

I went back to Stellar. It occurred to me that the crash might have been caused by the machine hosting the tbird files. This time no crash and to top it off there was a major discount offered for the msOutlook backup program if converter purchased. I went for it (warning: purchasing via DigitalRiver) and ta-da! Stellar's worked. slow, but it did it - except for the Trash folder.

So anyone looking this up, I recommend skip the rest of them and decided between Stellar and Sys-tools. Oh, and for the address book you need to hit F10 when in the tbird address book screen to see the Tools->Export option.

  1. Launch Mozilla Thunderbird.
  2. Open the folder with the messages you want to export from Thunderbird.
  3. Select the messages you want to export. Press and hold the "Ctrl" key and click on the emails to select multiple items, or press "Ctrl-A" to select all messages in the folder.

  4. Right-click one of the selected emails and choose "Save As" from the context menu.
  5. Select a folder in which to save the messages as EML files and click "Select Folder" to export the messages.
  6. Launch Microsoft Outlook 2010.
  7. Right-click the "Outlook" folder and select "New Folder" from the context menu.
  8. Type a name for the new folder in the "Name" box and click "OK" to create the folder.
  9. Select the new folder. It doesn't contain any emails yet, so the middle pane is empty.
  10. Select all the emails that you exported from Thunderbird. As you did before, hold "Ctrl" and click multiple items or press "Ctrl-A" to select all items.
  11. Click and drag the emails to the middle pane of Outlook 2010 to import them into the new folder. The emails will appear in the folder after the import is complete.
