give permission to subfolder while no access to parent folder, but shoud be able to list directory
WSS3.0 when I give access to a user access to a subfolder in Document library, it gives user limited access on parent folder, however the user cannot see the parent folder, but user can access subfolder by specifying the url directly. for instance: give user read access to libraryurl/folder1/subfolder1, user can click the link access the subfolder1, but when user go to libraryurl, cannot see folder1 though it shows limited access on folder1. then I have to give read access to folder1, but folder1 has many other folders which this user should not access. so my solution is give custom persion to all other sub folders, this is very inconvinent. for business reason, I cannot reorganize the directory structure by moving this special folder to a level out of folder1. My question is: how can I let user see the parent folder with limited access?

Hi, I understand that you want to give a user permission to access subfolder1 ,while don’t give him any permission to the folder1 .In this way ,the user will be assigned limited access to folder1 .He cannot see folder1 although he has the permission to view subfolder1. This is by design . If want to let the user see folder1 then the subfolders in it will all show to the user .The only thing you can do it to give the subfolders custom permission manually .Although it is inconvenient , it is the way to achieve this through user interface .Or you can write some scripts to achieve that. For more information about limit access ,please refer to this site: SharePoint shared: http://sharepointserved.blogspot.com/2011/05/limited-access-permission-in-sharepoint.html If you have any more questions ,please feel free to ask.
