dynamic collection update not working as expected
hi all, I have upgraded SCCM 2007 SP2 --> R3 in my customer environment and now in the middle of testing "dynamically add new resources" for couple of collections which have core applications advertised to it. This is to speed up software installation once new build machine join to the network with SCCM agent preinstalled. I hv tested in test lab working fine and when try to do it in production environment the test result is not consistance. Some of machine it does work, i mean once the machine rebuild all the core software pushing down to the machine with 15 - 20 minutes but some of it still have to wait for next day for full collection schedule update. Done some googled found a article of slow collections refresh i guess might not related. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;982400&sd=rss&spid=12769 About 9k collections that configured with once a day collections refresh and the rest without any schedule. Previously some of collections hv configured 15min to several hours but after that all changes to 1 days and hope it will help to improve but still not good. Anymore have encounter this kind of issue before? Could it related to too many collections (12k)? Regards, ytlaw

I think, you already gone through below article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff977097.aspx Extract from technet article The following resources can be evaluated by dynamic collection evaluation: Resources that have been initially discovered.Resources that have been provisioned with operating system deployment.Resources that have been scanned for initial hardware inventory.Resources that have been upgraded to a newer version of the Configuration Manager 2007 client. Also have a look at below discussion. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/configmgrgeneral/thread/677c88d3-9fc6-4a97-9aa9-a86f31cf69ae Anoop C Nair - @anoopmannur MY BLOG: http://anoopmannur.wordpress.com User Group: ConfigMgr Professionals This posting is provided AS-IS with no warranties/guarantees and confers no rights.

Hi ytlaw, Did you installed mentioned KB982400 in your environment? Kb982400 will prioritize collection evaluation queue and give your UI request a higher priority. From your description, I get in your product environment you have 9K collections configured with a schedule of one day for "update collection membership" and your core application advertisement target collections with "dynamically add new resources" configured right? So when collection created, first collection membership evaluation will query out all collection members for your dynamic collection which were already discovered. Then, when an OSD bare-metal or refresh job finished for a client, this client meet the dynamic collection evaluation rule, and if it meets collection query then it will added to the collection and client will receive the advertisement. Finally, in production environment which kind of client wil receive advertisement after one day collection membership evaluation but immediately? Also, how long computer client policy polling interval was set in your product environment? Hope this will help. Thanks

Hi Thanks for the reply. I haven't install KB982400 yet as it mentioned give priority for manual refresh. Do you think will help? Yes, I have 9k collections configured with schedule one a day with collection update and plan to enable dynamic collection update for the core applictions advertisement target collections which have about 100+. We build the master image using MDT and SCCM to push down the core applications. Along the line, there are some new / updates / security patches in core applications that requires to push down to client machines when new machine build. Before R3, we have wait for collection schedule update which configure once a day or have to configure it schedule update to 4 hours (not a good practise) and hope that with R3 dynamic update to speed up core applications push down to new client machine. Currently we are using vista 32/64bit and if this work we going to expand for win7 machines as well. For the computer client policy, it's a default setting which is every 60minutes. Hope that you can help to point to right direction and appreciate all the help. ytlaw

Is there some sort of report or query i can run to determine what collections have this "Dynamically add new resources" checked? We have enabled this on a high volume of collections and now the collection evaluator takes forever to update one of these collections. Since we have probably hundreds, I need an easier way to find and remove this.

You might be able to get the information from v_Collection, column RefreshType.Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de
