I have a SharePoint group I created with custom permissions on a specific list. I want to give the same group Contribute rights on a discussion board in the same site. It isn't working. Can't I give a specific group different permissions on different lists/librarys/boards within the site? Or do I need to create a different group?There are no mistakes; every result tells you something of value about what your are trying to accomplish.

Hi, YES, It is possible. Just open your another list and go to list settings--->Permission For this list-->Edit permission from Action tab (If it is not edited before)--->Click on your group and give the different permission.
