configuring FIM2010 with third party SMTP servers
Hi, From the documentation, I can see that FIM needs a mail enabled service account to send out notifications. Also, while installating FIM service, there is a place holder to provide "email server" address. Does FIM support only exchange 2007 or 2010, Or can we configure any third party SMTP server? Yes - I've used FIM with non-Exchange SMTP servers, and it works fine. During the FIM Service setup, you uncheck the option for 'Exchange 2007/2010' and enter the smtp server address. You can go back through setup for the FIM Service if you've already set it during setup. The only thing you lose by not using Exchange is the ability to use the Outlook client interface for group requests and approvals.Frank C. Drewes III - Architect - Oxford Computer Group

You can use third party SMTP server for FIM deployment like I'm using QMail in my FIM infrastructure. Thuan Soldier SharePoint Vietnam | Blog | Twitter

One handy use for this is to install the Windows Server SMTP server feature in your test lab so you don't need to install a full-up Exchange environment just for testing.Frank C. Drewes III - Architect - Oxford Computer Group
