change WSS 3.0 sql server from machine name to DNS name
We are running a WSS 3.0 server and a SQL 2005 server in a two server farm. The sharepoint system points to the databases on the SQL server using the SQL server machine name and I need to change the machine name to a DNS name, not moving anything at
this time, we just need to stop using the machine name and start using DNS and i am having trouble figuring out a procedure for this. Thanks in advanced for any advice.

Hi Robert-SysAdmin,
Thanks for your question.
From your description, you want to add a DNS name for your WSS 3.0 SQL server, and use the DNS name to connect to the SQL server. If I misunderstand your question, please let me know.
You can add a DNS record to point to the IP address of the SQL server, then make sure your WSS 3.0 server can resolve the DNS name. Finally, rerun the SharePoint configuration wizard,
check the effect.
Note: Please do the above steps in a lab environment before doing it in the product environment. Or back up your database before do it.
Hope this helps.

You should consider setting up SQL aliases. They offer various benefits. Todd Carter's blog has a walkthrough:
