cannot run this report. A filter must be specified error is coming when creating a report using report builder
An explanation for this error was requested in this old thread. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/sqlreportingservices/thread/F3E1508C-F23C-408C-BDA4-C413F9268B7C No one has looked at it for two years. Forum moderators state that people don't look at old threads to provide answers, I am reasking the question so as to get an explanation for this behavior. It is a straight forward report model with a straight forward report request. I have not gotten this error in reports on other report models. so Why am I getting it for this? The one person that answered the previous request suggested putting on a simple filter like ID > 0. Which I did and it works. But this does not explain why this should even be necessary. So If someone could answer this (and also the older thread), they would have my gratitude as well as double points. Edward R. Joell MCSD MCDBA

Hi joeller, Report Builder requires you to specify a filter when you design a report based on a report model, right? The entity in your model has a property called "InstanceSelection" with the value of "MandatoryFilter", this is the root cause of your scenario. The model generation wizard will set this value if the underlying table has a very large number of rows in it. If you don't like the setting, you can change it in Model Designer as below. 1. Open report model Property Window, 2. Click on Entity, and then the entity property will show. 3. Change “InstanceSelection” value depend on your requirement. Moreover, I just find this is a known issue and have been submit on Microsoft Connect, you can refer to it, Getting multidimensional report model to require a filter: http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/125453/getting-multidimensional-report-model-to-require-a-filter If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. mange tak. I will try that. I will let you know what happens. Update: OK I don't understand though why although several dozen entities are marked "mandatory filter" and I am changing all of them to "list", I only had to provide one filter that did not even relate to most of them. Update: Wunderbar. This is just what I needed. Update: Don't forget to go out to other site to enter your answer. I already referred people to your answer but you should get the points. When you do I will propose your reply as answer. Edward R. Joell MCSD MCDBA
