cannot drag and drop (move, or cut and paste) from one sharepoint document library to another using windows explorer
We have tested this on windows vista, windows 7, and windows XP. All clients using IE 8. Server is MOSS 2007 sp2. Users go to site 1, go to doc library 1, go to actions, open with windows explorer. They open another browser window, go to site 2, go to actions, open with windows explorer, which opens a second explorer window. Users attempt to drag and drop from doc library 1 windows explorer window to doc library 2 explorer window, and get Windows Security Warning -"Are you sure you want to copy or move files to this folder?" User clicks yes, then gets Move File "Cannot read from the source file or disk". File fails to move. Cut and paste gives the same behavior. Copy and paste works fine. Drag and drop between a doc library in windows explorer to a non sharepoint webdav folder windows explorer window works fine. Users say this was possible/working a few weeks ago. Files are small, less than 1 MB.

Hi, If you are using MOSS, you could enable some of the publishing features of the site and use the Content Management and Structure section to move files around. However, this option is not practical for the average users. Syntergy has a add on for SharePoint that adds Cut and Copy functionality to the drop down list within a document library: http://www.syntergy.com/products/sharepoint/more/cut_paste/ I wish you every success in your important work. WHAT? Why would I buy a 3rd party product to do what sharepoint used to do?

This reply is being rather ungrateful. The first suggestion (first para) was to use inbuilt SharePoint functions. As an alternative a third-party solution was suggested. It would be wiser not to be this critical when people are trying to help you. A simple "we would prefer not to use a third-party product" would have been enough. I feel like I am being brushed off and told that microsoft doesn't really care. This appears to be some kind of webdav/IE/explorer/sharepoint bug, and I have put a lot of effort into testing and describing the issue in detail. It is specifically going from one sharepoint site to another. Dragging and dropping from the file system or webdav on a different server works fine. I would appreciate it if someone could explain why this is happening- for example- do you believe that publishing features were turned on on a site on MOSS 2007, and then somehow got turned off, or is it that some kind of patch for windows was released, or something for IE 8?

I feel like I am being brushed off and told that microsoft doesn't really care. This appears to be some kind of webdav/IE/explorer/sharepoint bug, and I have put a lot of effort into testing and describing the issue in detail. The issue happens in sharepoint 2010 as well- it is specifically going from one sharepoint site to another. Is this behavior by design in 2010, if so, why?

>I feel like I am being brushed off and told that microsoft doesn't really care. These are forums and you are logging in here as a normal person with no special rights. There is no guaranteed support in forums. There are people like yourself (so called "peers") who are answering questions here in their free time and there are a handful of Microsoft support people who also help out here. If you are not happy with the level of support you are getting here, there are two ways to improve it. a) sign up for a TechNet or MSDN subscription that includes a slightly higher level of support here (when you use the appropriate account) b) ring MS Customer Support Services but be aware that in that case you will need to pay for their support if what you think is a bug, in fact isn't. (Which would include it was a bug but you are not up-to-date with your patches - i.e. it's been fixed already). The actual process is that you pay up-front for support and that cost is repaid if the problem is in fact a bug in the current version of the software. OK, thanks for the clarification. I thought there were product experts here who could answer the questions I was asking.
