can permissions be set at the document level in a library?
Is item level permission in a document library possible? I am building an intranet and need to provide edit permissions to specific office admins on specific documents. Is this possible? Or is the best I can do it create a special permissions group with just edit rights and all users in this group have edit rights to all docs in the library? There are no mistakes; every result tells you something of value about what you're are trying to accomplish.

While you can add permissions at the individual document level, this is very impractical for more than one or two documents. Much better is to create different document libraries with different access rights.SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links): http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx WSS3/MOSS FAQ (FAQ and Links) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx Both also have links to extensive book lists and to (free) on-line chapters

Yes. Choose 'Manage Permissions' from the dropdown list of the document. (From the Edit Drop Down) Like Mike said, managing every single document would get painful.Steve Clark, MCTS | Twin-Soft.com

For instance compare the situation when you add a document that needs these special permissions after you already have a couple of documents like this. a) Item Permissions solution: need to specify the permissions (again!) after adding the document. b) Document Library solution: permissions are already specified - just add the document. Now imagine adding 10 such documents ...
