Word losing metadata
I have a document library with various columns/meta-data. Some are multi-select boxes, some free form text, some drop down menus, etc. All the document are set properly with the proper tags. When I checkout (or don't even check out) the document and edit in Word, the meta-data related to fields using drop-down boxes are blank. If I do a Save-As in Word, I can see the values are blank. The check-box fields, the free-form text, etc, those values are all populated, but when I save the Word document, and go back to Share Point, the items are wiped away. It appears the data is getting "erased" once Word takes control of it. Any suggestions for a fix? Thanks - Jason

Hi Can you tell me whether the Client integration is enabled from the central administration ? If not enabled can you enable and retry the scenario. -Aravindaravind

Hi jaspol, What version of he Office Client are you using and what format are you saving the documents as doc or docx? There are known issues with using Office 2003 and metadata values and less of an issue but still pops up is saving docs weith the doc extensioin when using Office 2007 or greater -Ivan Ivan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.

Hi Jason, Thanks to share your post. Can the word document you have edited in the SharePoint be found in the explore view? Or is there something wrong with the intranet? Maybe you need to have a check the SharePoint settings. If these steps still have no function, you may have a check the log files, it may also give you a proper hand to find the error. Hope this could help you! Leo

Thanks all for the replies. I've continued to narrow down the problem. The problem only occurs for Column fields set as Drop-Down boxes (Check boxes and Radio buttons are fine). The problem also occurs when I have "Allow Management of Content Types" set to Yes. In my Document Library, the default document is the Word 2003 document. I then added various content types, and called one Excel (and used an Excel sheet as a template), and PowerPoint (and used PPT as a template). When I enable these, the drop downs cease to work (the values get erased) when I open for edditing in Word, Excel, PPT, etc. If I only have 1 content type, the drop down boxes are not impacted when I open the document in Word. I am using Office 2003. For Sharepoint, using WSS 3.0.
